What is needed in each case is thoughtful design and management of the learning environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/inspire\/files\/2015\/08\/P1030530-nineevents.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-1123 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/inspire\/files\/2015\/08\/P1030530-nineevents-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"chalkboard, apple, eraser, iPad that says &quot;nine events&quot;\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1504\/files\/2015\/08\/P1030530-nineevents-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1504\/files\/2015\/08\/P1030530-nineevents-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1504\/files\/2015\/08\/P1030530-nineevents.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Gagn\u00e9 popularized the concept of nine \u201cinstructional events.\u201d Each represents a step in the teaching and learning process:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gain learners\u2019 attention<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inform students of learning objective<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stimulate recall of prior knowledge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Present stimulus material (content)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide learning guidance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Elicit performance (practice)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide feedback<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assess performance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enhance retention and transfer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you regularly use these steps in your courses?
