Half a century has passed since educational psychologist Robert Gagn\u00e9 published his influential book, <\/span>The<\/span><\/i> Conditions of Learning<\/span><\/i>, but his ideas are relevant to online and hybrid learning even today. <\/span>He presciently wrote, \u201cThe real point to be made is that use of a variety of instructional modes is both feasible and potentially effective. . . . What is needed in each case is thoughtful design and management of the learning environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"chalkboard,<\/a>Gagn\u00e9 popularized the concept of nine \u201cinstructional events.\u201d Each represents a step in the teaching and learning process:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Gain learners\u2019 attention<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Inform students of learning objective<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Stimulate recall of prior knowledge<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Present stimulus material (content)<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Provide learning guidance<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Elicit performance (practice)<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Provide feedback<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Assess performance<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Enhance retention and transfer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Do you regularly use these steps in your courses? To address this question, you might consider what your students experience as they work through a typical weekly module in one of your Canvas course sites:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Are they aware of weekly learning outcomes?<\/span><\/i> If not, state them in a weekly overview that serves as the first page in each Canvas module!<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>How do you gain their attention?<\/span><\/i> Through video, audio, images, interactivity?<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Do you use your students\u2019 prior knowledge as a scaffold for the learning in your course? <\/span><\/i>In fact, do you make it a point to assess what they know at the outset your course?<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Beyond simply presenting content, how do you provide substantial learning guidance?<\/span><\/i> Do you foster active learning through online interaction student-to-student, student-to-content and student-to-instructor?<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Do you frequently assess performance and provide feedback?<\/span><\/i> Do you use weekly quizzes and\/or low-stakes writing or problem-solving exercises?<\/span><\/p>\n

    Ultimately, over the course of a term, have you blazed a trail that fully supports your students\u2019 retention and transfer?<\/span> If so, bravo!<\/span><\/p>\n
