{"id":893,"date":"2017-05-13T15:47:03","date_gmt":"2017-05-13T22:47:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/inspiration\/?p=893"},"modified":"2017-05-13T15:47:03","modified_gmt":"2017-05-13T22:47:03","slug":"motor-proteins-people-can-change-directionality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/inspiration\/2017\/05\/13\/motor-proteins-people-can-change-directionality\/","title":{"rendered":"Motor proteins\u2014and people\u2014can change directionality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It took three years of adventures after college\u2014including stints as a ski instructor, barista and a commercial chemist\u2014before Andrew Popchock knew that he wanted to return to the lab to pursue a PhD at OSU\u2019s Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_894\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/inspiration\/files\/2017\/05\/microtubule_sliding_assay11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-894\" class=\"wp-image-894 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/inspiration\/files\/2017\/05\/microtubule_sliding_assay11-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two microtubules slide across each other by the walking of motor proteins sandwiched between them<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Andrew\u2019s research takes place at Dr. Weihong Qiu\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/dyne.physics.oregonstate.edu\/\">Single-Molecule Biophysics Laboratory<\/a> and focuses on kinesin-14s\u2014motor proteins found in eukaryotic cells. These motor proteins in cells travel along microtubules to create and maintain the mitotic spindle, which are macromolecular structures that are responsible for chromosome segregation during cell division.<\/p>\n<p>By using an imaging technique called TIRF microscopy, a team of researchers from Dr. Qiu\u2019s lab discovered that a kinesin-14 found in fungus cells called KlpA can change direction along its cytoskeleton tracks. KlpA is the first motor protein of its kind that researchers have discovered that demonstrates this type of bidirectional movement. The results of their study were recently published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms13999\"><em>Nature Communications<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_895\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/inspiration\/files\/2017\/05\/Experiment-947.cropped.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-895\" class=\"wp-image-895 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/inspiration\/files\/2017\/05\/Experiment-947.cropped-300x119.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"119\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-895\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Total Internal Reflection Fluorscence (TIRF) microscopy image of two microtubules sliding across each other<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The motor protein that Andrew studies could be important in <a href=\"http:\/\/impact.oregonstate.edu\/2017\/04\/discovery-reversible-motor-protein-shed-light-cancer-growth\/\">helping researchers understand cancer growth<\/a>. This could have implications for drug treatment therapy, potentially guiding the creation of motor protein-based molecular devices for more controlled drug delivery in cancer treatments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_896\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-896\" class=\"wp-image-896 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/inspiration\/files\/2017\/05\/IMG_1105-e1494715268742-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrew on the Oregon Coast<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Growing up, Andrew was interested in physics and biology, but it wasn\u2019t until he worked in a lab under the direction of a graduate student at Washington State University that he began to consider graduate studies.
