Scholarship Dessert honors extraordinary students

The College of Science is pleased to recognize its outstanding scholarship students at the spring Scholarship Dessert on Thursday, May 23, 2019, 4 – 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union Lounge (1st floor, near Java Stop). The annual celebration provides an opportunity for our generous scholarship donors to meet and build connections with our science students that their philanthropy supports.

Students, alumni, friends, advisors and faculty will come together to enjoy delicious cupcakes, conversation and to honor the achievements of our 2019-20 scholarship recipients, and to thank our generous donors. A donor and a student will share how scholarships helped shaped their lives, followed by an interactive activity.

For the 2019-20 year, the College of Science awarded $942,000 in scholarships to 357 science students for merit, need and undergraduate research experiences. Thanks to generous support from science alumni and others, the College was able to grant scholarships to 35% of the 821 applicants who applied this year (this does not include Presidential, Provost and other OSU Scholarships). The average scholarship was about $2,900. In terms of SURE Science scholarships—which support students so they can pursue full-time summer research experiences with faculty—the College awarded a total of $240,000 to 40 students. This is the highest number of SURE Science scholarships and the highest number of students the College has ever been able to support through these awards, thanks to increased financial support from alumni and friends.

Scholarships enable the College to attract, retain and inspire top students, most of whom go on to high achieving careers in industry, graduate school, medical school and other professional programs after graduation. Oregon State’s financial need-based scholarships also help academically talented low-income and first-generation students from Oregon and elsewhere to stay and excel in college.
