The College of Science is pleased to recognize its extraordinary scholarship students at the spring Scholarship Dessert on Monday, June 4, 2018, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m at CH2M Hill Alumni Center in the Ballroom. The annual celebration provides an opportunity for our generous donors to undergraduate scholarships to meet and build connections with our science students that their philanthropy supports.
Students, alumni, friends, advisors and faculty come together to enjoy festive cupcakes, conversation and to honor the tremendous achievements of our 2018-19 scholarship recipients as well as to thank our generous donors. A few of our remarkable scholarship students and an alumna will share how scholarships have shaped their lives.
A poster session will be held from 5:30-6:00 p.m. to encourage mingling and networking among students, alumni and friends of the College.
In 2017-18, the College of Science awarded more than $906,000 in scholarships to 223 current science students for merit, need and undergraduate research experiences. This represented an increase of nearly 17% more funding for students. Thanks to the generosity of science alumni and friends, the College awarded more than 300 college-level and departmental scholarships and summer research fellowships from among 680 applicants (does not include Presidential, Provost and other OSU Scholarships).
These students were an impressive and diverse group.
- 58% of them were women
- 30% were also part of the Honors College
- 46% (103) were minority students
- 65% of them worked during the academic year, nearly 10% worked more than 20 hours per week
- 28% were first in their family to attend college
Scholarships enable the College to attract, retain and inspire top students, most of whom go on to high achieving careers in industry, graduate school, medical school and other professional programs after graduation. Oregon State’s financial need-based scholarships also help academically talented low-income and first-generation students from Oregon and elsewhere to stay and excel in college.
