FOE Fifty-One Erg, an international workshop on the physics and observations of supernovae, supernova remnants and other cosmic explosive phenomena, hosted by the Department of Physics, took place on June 5 to June 8, 2017. The workshop was held in the Construction and Engineering Hall at the La Sells Stewart Center on campus.
Nearly 30 astrophysicists from seven different countries, including Denmark, Japan, Ireland, Britain, Italy and the United States, presented invited research talks during the conference. The speakers discussed topics ranging from neutrino emission to gravitational waves and gamma-ray bursts. In addition, there were 50 contributed talks by physicists from a wide variety of universities and research institutes as well as a poster session.
A highlight of the conference was a Science Pub on Tuesday, June 6, “Turning Stars into Gold” by Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz, an astrophysicist from the University of California-Santa Cruz. Dr. Ramirez-Ruiz explained how the common elements of life emerge from stellar explosions. The Science Pub, a free public event, was hosted in the Old World Deli, 341 S.W. 2nd Street in Corvallis.
The conference was chaired and organized by Davide Lazzati, an associate professor of physics at Oregon State.
