2020 Fortune Top 100 Companies to Work For

In the Top 100 Fortune Best Companies to work for, I wanted to highlight four specifically.

At #17 is Veterans United Home Loans. The company specializes in helping Veterans with Financial Services and is based out of Columbia, Missouri with approx. 3983 employees. The longest tenure of employees at the company is 6-10 years which is 22%. When employees started at Veterans United, 98% said they were made to feel welcome starting their new job. Over 95% of employees stated that people care about each other and are given the resources to do their job.

At #24 is Capital One. The company boasts 44,934 employees and works through Financial Services to help the general population. The company is based out of Mclean, VA and has an 88% rating overall from employees. The 90% of employees stated that management is competent at running the business and giving people responsibility. Words that stick out the most from employees about the company are, people, culture, and benefits.

At #43 is Scripps Health. They are a Health Care Organization that is based out of San Diego, California and employs 17,000+ staff members. They state, “Caring is our mission and drives everything we do” (Scripps Health, 2020). The Hospital’s overall rating from employees is 85% stating that it is a great place to work. The 90% of employees say that they are proud to tell people they work there and 89% feel like they are contributing to the community in a good way.

At #55 is United Services Automobile Association or USAA. This company works only with Military and their families to provide Financial Services and different levels of Insurance. It is a leader of the Insurance and Banking Industry and has 38,586 employees. Employees state that it is an overall good place to work at 80%. When asked on the Trust Index Survey, words that stuck out were, members, mission, and benefits.

Follow Up Discussion:

Human Resources Managment in the context of these 4 companies shine bright no matter how big the companies were. In order to show that the people matter, we could see driving factors in the words mentioned, like benefits and how people cared about each other in the work environment. These organizations make sure that their culture is presented in a positive way to their employees and the communities outside of the organizations. They do this by using mission statements like Scripps Health, and at USAA stating that they are members not just customers. These are pertinent goals in the Planning Process of Strategic Human Resources Management.

Overall, I’d like to be a manager that embodies these 4 companies and how they operate. I want to be a manager that employees feel like they can trust and know that I focused on the culture of the workplace. The environment in a good company should feel productive and like each employee is contributing to the growth each day. If an employee feels like they can be trusted and given responsibilities to help, they will be proud to say where they work. I think there are challenges to this along with many others that a manager can face. In First Break All the Rules: What the World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently, differences in stores showed that community at work and having opinions at your job can halt productivity. The biggest challenges with this can be, how do you make employees feel heard? Also, how can you instill a fun environment while also being productive in your time? Navigating the working environment and the people’s environment can be especially hard. The hope is to find the right balance, whether it be 50/50 or slightly different, that can land you on the Top 100 Companies.
