My Experience w/ Bad Job Descriptions

I have worked two jobs that I thought were both pretty bad. One was as a frozen meat delivery driver/warehouse worker. The other was at Arnold Dining Hall here at OSU. The inaccuracy of job descriptions from both of these positions caused me to favor one over the other.

At the frozen meat warehouse, work was very physically demanding. The entire work day consisted of picking up and putting down 40+ lb boxes of various frozen meats. While work was exhausting, pay was generous. I found this job through word of mouth and the only real job description I got was that it was physical. I believe the day after hearing about it, I went in asking about a job and got hired on the spot. Now, this was a seasonal job that I worked during summers.

During the school year I worked at Arnold Dining Hall. I first got hired to fill the sole purpose of going around campus and collecting reusable to-go food containers. This, I was aware of when applying. What the job description and specification failed to mention was how gross the job actually was. Aside from collecting the used and sometimes filled containers, I would also have to empty them. Often times these containers would pile up at drop off locations where they would sit. Students would also return full containers they had left sitting in their dorms for a questionable amount of time. Too many times was I the one to find the rotted food inside each container. It always stunk and I was constantly exposed to moldy food. I found another position in the dining hall but they would still make me do it when no one else knew how to. The job wasn’t difficult but its specifications and conditions were not enjoyable. I also thought the pay was not worth what I had to deal with.

I definitely favored the warehouse over the dining hall. Even though both employers provided insufficient job descriptions that gave me a general idea of what to expect, it wasnt until I actually worked at these place did I realize how they actually were. I feel like employers hold back or “sugar coat” on the true job descriptions and specifications of certain positions. The advantages of this having more applicants but also probably just as many resignations.
