Effective and Ineffective Interview Experiences

In the past I’ve been interviewed for many things starting off in high school. These interviews were pretty basic as they were looking for people that would be a right fit for things like yearbook and ASB. As I got older, I started applying for jobs that required a professional interview process. The two interviews I will be describing is when I got my job as a hotel front desk receptionist and a hostess at the restaurant I’m currently working at.

For my job working as a hotel front desk receptionist I felt like it wasn’t the best interview. This is because my interviewer was mostly making small talk the whole time and briefly looking at my resume. The only time we talked about the actual job was when he was offering me a job. He gave me no information about the side activities I would be doing and didn’t ask me about my experience or how I handle certain situations. I feel like these questions would have been very valuable as I had no idea what I was getting into. I ended up mostly working the late afternoon shifts which meant I had to deal with a lot of short tempered business men coming in from a full day of traveling. This was an added stress to my job as I was treated with little respect. During the hiring process he also made the job seem more enjoyable then it actually was. This is a bad tactic as it lowers the moral of the new employees that thought they were signing up for something quite different.

Now, at my job at the restaurant I believe they handled the interview process more professionally. They asked me if I ever had experience in the food industry before as well as other questions to figure out what kind of position I’d be the most successful in. They also asked me how I deal with commotion and caouse as this restaurant is very popular in San Diego. This was the most informational interview I’ve had that set me up for success in the food industry. When looking at our lectures this week I feel like they had a strong understanding of contract validity as they asked me questions of how I deal with stress and caouse in different situations.
