This blog post is about the interview process. Looking back on my past interviews and relating them to this week’s learning material I can know see that there were some effective and non effective strategies used.
I noticed that for many of my interviews they were mainly unstructured or had a job knowledge structure. This may be due to them being part time or seasonal jobs but many of these interviews I saw as ineffective. The interviews did not contain developed questions that measured me against any benchmark. Most questions included “how did you hear about this job” or “tell me about yourself”, which were frustrating to answer because they seemed like vague and non job specific.
I have had job interviews though that came across as effective. These interviews had only structured questions that seemed to be pertaining to what the job entails. Also, the interviewers had extensive knowledge about the subject or even included a employee in that position help ask specific job related questions. I found these interviews often resulted in reliable and valid results. I knew this because when I would get hired by these companies the employees seemed to provide the most utility for them.
Overall, the recommendation I would give to the past interviewers is to be prepared. I think if they took the time to understand the job and ask specific and measurable question then the companies conducting the interviews would see more reliability and validity with their new hires. I also think that performing more tests can give a greater insight into the people they are interviewing.
