Week 8 Blog

For this week’s post our class was tasked with taking three tests to determine our stress levels, stress coping mechanisms, and if we are Type  A personality. Each test was relatively simple and gave back some interesting results. The first test, I received a score of 200. This means that in my life currently I have stressors that could result in a 50% chance of a mental breakdown. The next test I received a 65% problem focused coping mechanism. This means that I mainly focus on changing or eliminating the problem that is causing me stress. Lastly, the Type A personality test I got a score of 41. This indicates that I am generally warm and tolerable towards others but can have occasional situations of anger and impatience.

While receiving the scores for these tests, I learned a little more about myself. I never usually took the time to really understand how stress affects my life or how I try to handle it. With what I know now I think that I will try to accept the stressful things in my life that I cannot change. Especially looking forward to my professional career I am in a stressful industry, construction. In this field there are a lot of stressful things that can occur, but I must remind myself to only focus on what I can actively change instead of worry about the unchangeable stressors. Fortunately, it looks like the industry is trying to turn this stressful environment around. A lot of construction companies are using a “top down” approach and trying to teach management on how to help employees create a atmosphere of properly managing stress. Overall, these tests and research made me more knowledgeable about managing stress in the future at work and in my personal life.
