After taking the Life Stress Inventory, Coping and Stress Management Skills Test, and the Type A Personality test I have discovered that I am a very stressed out person. Stress can be a good or bad thing but it terms of lifestyle and mental health, stress can seriously impact ones quality of life. I learned that I must do a better job at managing stress, as well as doing what I can when I can to reduce the stressors in my life. In order to learn more about what I can do I also learned about what many organizations do to help mitigate stress, especially in the workplace. I came across an article by healthywork.org. It stated that there are four main steps a company should take to help with stress in the work place. 1. is to learn about unhealthy work and solutions to it. 2. is to asses the level of work stressors in your workplace. 3. is to equip yourself or your organization with healthy work tools. 4. is to take action that advances healthy work for all. Many factors involved in what stress people out at work can be there physical environment. Is it safe? Is it physically demanding. The same goes for their psychological environment. Climate and culture of the workplace is also a big factor. This can include routine schedules, or professional or unprofessional behaviors at work. To add to all of this is benefits. Proper compensation and vacation time are crucial for employees to manage stress. Many companies work to mitigate these problems. Some solutions they have come up with have been increasing PTO (paid time off), offering up surveys for employees to post their grievances with the company. Even something as simple as an open door policy can seriously benefit employees and the levels of stress they feel at work. Work can be hard enough on its own for some people. Without the proper support from their management to increase safety, and wellness the employees will burn out. Humans will never not be battling stress to some level in their lives as it is part of our nature, but by knowing some of these things we can strive everyday to become better at managing that stress.
