I’m going to be documenting my work and thoughts throughout my last quarter here at OSU. I’m incredibly excited to graduate and put what I’ve learned to practice (but also to start making money).

My CS Journey So FaR

Before this program, I was living in New York working as an office manager for a physical therapy clinic. I didn’t have too much exposure to computer science and code in general – I barely knew what “Hello World” was referring to. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I was furloughed and found myself bored with nothing productive to do. One of my friends who worked as a software engineer, had pushed me to learn how to code and gave me the book, Automate the Boring Stuff with Python by Al Sweigart. As cheesy as it sounds, I felt like I had found a new passion and immediately wanted to change career paths.

Coming from the healthcare background, the transition was a little tough. I struggled a lot with the first two computer science courses (CS 161 and CS 162). What would take me a few minutes to solve now, took me hours before. But you know what, I really enjoyed every minute of it. Now, I love building full-stack web-apps that everyone can use to improve their quality of life. For example, I’ve made a bill-splitting application that can calculate the post tax/tip share of each member based on the items that they ate and drank. I’ve also made a web application that can recommend a recipe based on the items that a user has in their fridge or pantry. My dream is to eventually have my own company and produce software that can continue to bring impact to people’s lives.

Potential Projects

Since I want to pursue a career as a full-stack developer, I’m looking to work on a project that allows me to work on a web-app. The ones specifically that caught my eye were:

Dating app for animal adoption

Job Tracker

Help Save Craigslist

I’m super excited and I can’t wait to get started.

Hi there, I’m Calvin and thanks for checking out my blog.
