It’s been a while since my last blog post and I definitely have been busy with school and work as well as managing my time overall. I’ve honestly been a little more stressed and tired than usual because I’m learning a lot at my work while still putting my best foot forward with my school work. Also, I’ve been trying to make time for myself and have a social life. It’s been a learning curve in understanding how to balance work, school, and having a social life but I think after a few weeks into working, I’m starting to get the hang of it.
With my database class, I’ve taken more of a lead role in creating documents for our project and have taken up a little of the front end coding as well. With this class, I’ve been more strategically delegating tasks to my partner so that we’re optimizing our time and effort for our project since we’re both pretty busy with other responsibilities as well. Initially, I hadn’t intended to take on a lead role for this class, but I think it’s good practice to have some of these leadership responsibilities for future projects and teams that I’ll be a part of some day.
I’ve been learning a lot from my work and it’s been great getting to know and learn more about the people at my workplace. I typically have meetings every other day for stand-ups and a lot of my work has primarily been reading through documentation and Ruby/Rails books. My main tasks so far have been to create RSpec (a Ruby testing framework) tests for other developers on my team. I’ve also been syncing with my mentor about two to three days a week, so that has been a great learning experience.
As cheesy as it sounds, I’ve learned a TON from this quarter. Even though I feel super drained from coding over 13-14 hours a day, I’m still enjoying what I do and coding. I’m very excited to graduate and fully focus on work. Thanks for reading my blog! – Calvin Hoo
