Blog Post #5

As week 5 is coming to an end, I want to reflect on what I’ve learned so far from my classes. I’m currently enrolled in two classes, Databases and Capstone project.

Within my databases class, I’m learning a lot about database design which I personally find interesting and incredibly important. A properly designed database cause less frustrations and allow the users to easily grab the necessary data. As an amateur developer, I know that I’ve created some poorly optimized databases with redundant and repeated data. In addition to database design, I’m also learning the SQL language. SQL has been fun to learn and I can see why it is THE premier database language. I’ve only used no-SQL databases such as Firebase and MongoDB so its nice to round out my back-end repertoire.

For the capstone project, I’m currently working on a pet-adoption web-application. My team has run into a few hiccups with our database that set us back a week but the project is coming together. The next two weeks require us to grind out the rest of the functionality and I’m honestly quite nervous since this is the “meat” of the project. As a beginner to React there is a lot to take in and I wish I had a bit more time but I think we’ll be able to grind it out and help each other where needed.
