THIS WEEK! <\/strong>Go Global with Fulbright: How to Go Abroad to Teach English<\/strong>
Join OSU National and Global Scholarships Advising (NGSA) to explore options for going abroad post-graduation to teach English! The Fulbright US Student program sponsors students with round trip airfare, a living stipend and health insurance to go abroad to a selection of over 75 different countries for one year to act as an English Teaching Assistant in foreign language classes. English Teaching Assistants (ETA’s) are flexible and dynamic members of k-12 schools or universities abroad. They assist with cultural activities and language learning at an assigned school. Being an ETA opens the door to cultural competency, communication skills and can open up possibilities for your career beyond the Fulbright year. NGSA will also discuss other opportunities to teach English available worldwide. May 5th, 2026, 4 to 5 p.m., LINC 343 and online.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

THIS WEEK! HC x COB Discourse Movie Night!<\/strong>
Honors College is partnering with the College of Business Discourse Program for a screening of If Beale Street Could Talk at the Darkside Cinema on May 6 at 5 p.m..This film, based on James Baldwin’s 1974 novel, follows Tish and Fonny, a young black couple from 1970s New York City, as they try to fight the criminal justice system after Fonny was wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. Following the movie, there will be a discussion panel with OSU faculty and staff, where students can talk about themes in the film and how we see them today. NGSA will discuss the many versatile options available with Fulbright and how you can cater this experience to meet your needs. THIS WEEK! Partners in the Prompt: Co-creating AI Policy and Pedagogy with Students<\/strong>
Join us on May 7th from noon to 1 p.m. for the Engagement@OSU Webinar, Partners in the Prompt: Co-creating AI Policy and Pedagogy with Students, presented by Dr. Demian Hommel. In this month\u2019s webinar, Professor Demian Hommel will explore how generative AI is reshaping higher education and why traditional top-down approaches to AI policy often miss the student perspective. This session introduces a collaborative framework for developing AI guidelines that treat students as active partners rather than passive subjects. Drawing on recent explorations of how students perceive both the risks and benefits of generative AI tools, Professor Hommel will discuss the shift from restrictive \u201cpolicing\u201d models to co-created ethical practices. Attendees will see practical strategies for bridging institutional goals with the lived realities of today\u2019s classrooms. NEW! The Honors College annual student survey is now open and HC students are invited to participate!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual HC survey gathers feedback on key aspects of the honors experience to help us assess how we\u2019re doing and guide future planning and improvements. Responses are intended to be anonymous so you can share your thoughts freely; while some demographic questions are included to help us understand whether we are fostering a welcoming environment for all students, you are always welcome to skip any question that could affect your anonymity. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey by June 30<\/a> for a chance to win a $50 Beaver Store gift card\u2014your feedback truly makes a difference! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NEW! Honors College CPR Certification Class<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Honors College will be offering a 12-person adult CPR certification class, free of charge to the student participants! This event will take place on May 11th, 2026, from 1:30 to 5 p.m. in LINC 345. Once students pass the final exam, their adult CPR certification will be valid for two years before needing to be renewed. This is a great opportunity for students to get certified for summer work, internships and more. Please also note that this class is for adult CPR only, not infants and children. Anyone interested in attending must register, <\/em><\/strong>or they will not be able to attend. Once 12 students have registered, others will be put on a waitlist and notified if a spot opens up. Students who register for this event must be able to commit to this entire session, or they will not be certified. <\/em><\/strong>Questions about this event can be directed to Taylor Maki- makit@oregonstate.edu. Attend the Honors College Spring Faculty Research Showcase!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Join the HC on Monday, May 11 from 4-5:30 p.m. PT in LInC 128 or on Zoom to learn about faculty research, scholarship and creative work at Oregon State. The Honors College Spring Faculty Research Showcase will feature faculty from the College of Business, College of Liberal Arts and other multidisciplinary researchers across Oregon State. HC Faculty Research Showcases are open to all honors students, including those who aren\u2019t ready to begin a thesis. NEW! HC x DPS Women’s Self-Defense Class<\/strong>
The Honors College is partnering with the Department of Safety for a one-day women’s self-defense class on Saturday May 23 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Cascade Hall. Students must be able to commit to the whole event. This 4-hour class will focus on awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, and provides participants with practical self-defense techniques in a supportive environment. Questions about this event can be directed to Taylor Maki- makit@oregonstate.edu<\/a>. If attending, please come in comfortable clothes to be moving in, and bring yourself some water. Honors College Annual Thesis Fair<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Come celebrate our HC students\u2019 thesis research and culminating projects at our annual Thesis Fair<\/a>! On Friday, May 29, students will present lightning talks in person on the Corvallis campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Then, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., students will showcase their honors thesis research through poster presentations on the third floor of the Learning Innovation Center, where they will be available to discuss their work. It’s a great way to learn about the different research your peers have been involved in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honors College Spring Picnic<\/strong>
The Honors College and Honors College Student Association is excited to celebrate the end of the year with honors students and faculty at the annual Honors College Spring Picnic on Wednesday, June 3, from 4\u20136 p.m. in the SEC Plaza. Enjoy classic picnic favorites, including hot dogs, hamburgers, and an ice cream bar. Vegan options will be available. This event is open to all current Honors College students and faculty. Global Medial Brigades at Oregon State University<\/strong>
Global Medial Brigades at Oregon State University (GMB) is a student organization committed to implementing sustainable health systems to underserved populations throughout the world. That means we volunteer and staff medical clinics and screenings in communities (mostly rural) where access to health services and information is lacking. Clinics are locally initiated and locally managed \u2014 we work with in-country doctors and nurses to support collection of health data, intake of patients, recording vitals and providing health education for adults and children. It\u2019s a great experience for students interested in global health and any health profession. It\u2019s also very humbling and rewarding. We\u2019re currently preparing for our brigade in Panama in June. While that brigade is full, you might be interested in learning more about what\u2019s involved in the experience. You might also be interested in participating in our brigade in December to Ghana \u2014 we\u2019re in the process of putting together a brigade team for that experience now. Our meetings are on Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 in STAG 113. We\u2019d love to see you there and please introduce yourself to one of the club officers. Research Participants Needed: Share Your Views on AI Chatbots like ChatGPT<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Oregon State School of Public Policy is seeking participants for a study on students\u2019 experiences with and views on large language model tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Participants will complete a brief survey and an in-depth interview on these topics and will be entered into a drawing to win one of six $50 prepaid gift cards.
