Curious about what Honors College students are researching? Join us for the HC Undergraduate Research Showcases \u2014 dynamic online events where students present their thesis research in short, lightning-style talks. These showcases offer a glimpse into the wide range of topics our students explore and are a great way to get inspired, learn about research opportunities and connect with fellow students and faculty. NEW THIS WEEK! <\/strong>Civil Discourse Discussion: “When is Political Violence Justified?”<\/u><\/strong>
All Honors College students are invited to join the Honors College and the College of Business for a Civil Discourse Discussion on the subject \u201cWhen is Political Violence Justified?\u201d on Thursday, November 20 from 5\u20137 p.m. in Austin Hall, Room 222<\/strong>. This event provides a chance to share perspectives, listen thoughtfully and explore different viewpoints in a welcoming space. Guided by moderators, students will practice the principles of civil discourse and connect ideas from this year\u2019s Honors College summer read, I Never Thought of It That Way, by M\u00f3nica Guzm\u00e1n. No debate experience? No problem! All students are welcome \u2014 just bring an open mind and a willingness to listen and share. HC Juniors and Seniors: Participate in Online vs. In-Person Lab Study<\/strong>
Researchers in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering and the School of Psychological Science at OSU are conducting a study investigating the effectiveness of online and in-person lab environments <\/strong>for engineering education. In this study you will be asked to learn a relevant engineering topic and complete an associated lab exercise. Participation includes a time commitment of 6-10 hours<\/strong> spread over a 2-week period during Fall term, and a compensation of $20 per hour<\/strong> of participation (up to $200 total). To be eligible, you must be 18 years or older, fluent in English, and a junior- or senior-level undergraduate engineering student. To enroll in this study or if you have any questions about participating, please fill out <\/a>this form<\/a> or contact Gabrielle Paul (paulga@oregonstate.edu).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WEEKLY! HCSA Meeting<\/strong>
Join the Honors College Association (HCSA) for weekly club meetings! HCSA is a student-led club that plans activities for Honors College students. HCSA puts together social events, academic events, professional development events, and more. Join HCSA and help make great events happen! The Honors College Student Association holds general meetings every Monday from 5-6:00 p.m. in LInC 268<\/strong>. Theatre in Ashland Seminar (HC 407)<\/u><\/strong>
The honors Theatre in Ashland Seminar (HC 407) includes a weekend trip Oct 3\u20135, with a pre-trip meeting Sept 29 and a post-trip meeting Oct 27. Along with attending performances (and possibly pre-show discussions or talkbacks), students will reflect through journal responses and create a presentation that reimagines the material in a new way \u2014 whether by performing a scene, re-writing one, analyzing a character, exploring historical context, or developing a fresh design concept. Wilderness First Aid (PAC 325H) <\/u><\/strong>
This Fall, honors students can gain hands-on skills in emergency care through Wilderness First Aid (PAC 325H). This one-credit course covers anatomy, physiology, injury assessment, short-term and long-term care, small-group rescues and evacuation planning in non-urban settings. Class meets Wednesdays 2\u20133:50 p.m. and includes a required field trip on Nov 15 from 8 a.m.\u20134:50 p.m. The $200 course fees can be offset with the Honors College Experiential Scholarship! Apply for the scholarship here: beav.es\/Gxe<\/strong>. Multidisciplinary Design for Social Impact (DSI 415H)<\/u><\/strong>
Still looking for an Honors thesis topic? Juniors and seniors can explore potential projects through DSI 415H: Multidisciplinary Design for Social Impact, offered this fall. In this course, students work in teams on community-driven design projects with real-world impact in areas such as climate resilience, sustainability, accessible clothing, inclusive design, food systems, and community well-being. Murder, Mayhem, and Makeup: Lady Detectives on Page and Screen (HC 407)<\/u><\/strong>
From Agatha Christie”s Miss Marple to Kristen Bell”s Veronica Mars, women have solved some of the dastardliest crimes of the detective genre both on the page and on the screen. We will look at a variety of texts and films featuring lady detectives (some very ladylike indeed, some decidedly not) to examine the cross-sections between gender and genre. How do these detectives use their performance of gender to solve mysteries? How do these stories challenge, reinforce, and\/or complicate traditional notions of gender and crime?   1. If you haven\u2019t done so already, make sure you don\u2019t have an\u00a0Advising Registration Hold<\/strong>\u00a0still on your account. If you do, schedule an appointment with your major college advisor to get that lifted.\u00a0The HC Advisors cannot lift this hold<\/strong>. If you already met with your major college advisor, but still see the Advising Registration Hold, kindly reach out to them via email to request the hold be lifted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. If you are a first-year student and have not yet taken the\u00a0HC 408 Stage 1 Thesis Class<\/strong>, try to register for it Winter term. Make sure when registering that you take Stage 1 and not one of our other stage courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

If you are planning to take more than one\u00a0HC 407 seminar class<\/strong>\u00a0in a term, note that you will originally receive an error code stating that you cannot register for more than one class with the same name. The registrar\u2019s office has created an automatic override to be placed on HC student accounts to fix this error code. Wait a few moments, and try to register again.\n

      If for any reason you need to meet with a different advisor than the one you are assigned, you can schedule a meeting with a different advisor on our\u00a0academic advising page<\/a>.\u00a0uding Ecampus students, 24\/7 access by text or phone with a licensed mental health counselor (MySSP stands for \u201cMy Student Support Program\u201d). The app makes it easy to schedule short-term counseling appointments with the same ongoing counselor and provides educational materials covering mental health topics. Students can communicate with a counselor in five different languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, French, Spanish or English); additional language options are available upon request.       Based in Lyon, France, this 17-day program is led by OSU faculty and runs from June 16 to July 2, 2026. Students earn four colloquium credits through activities integrating the theme of \u201cCommodities, Cafes and Climate Change.\u201d An Information and Q&A Session for the 2026 France program will be on Monday, Nov. 17 from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the Autzen Classroom in Valley Library (Room 2082<\/strong>, located on the same floor as the main entrance). This is a \u201cdrop in\u201d session, so please come when you can and leave when you must, even if your schedule only will allow a short stay.       NEW TOMORROW!\u00a0<\/strong>Using the Gilman Scholarship to Go Abroad<\/strong>
      Tomorrow, 4:00pm – 5:00pm<\/strong>       <\/a>on Zoom<\/a>.\u00a0Join University of Oregon’s Sophia Schwartz to talk about the Gilman Scholarship and how you, too can use this scholarship to go abroad during your undergraduate. The Gilman Scholarship offers up to $5,000 to Pell Grant-eligible students to study or intern abroad on a program of their choice. Add-ons are available to students studying “critical need languages” and those who are STEM students. OSU’s National and Global Scholarships Advising will also be there to share with students how they can get support for their applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      TOMORROW! <\/u><\/strong>Aruba Spring Break 2026 Study Abroad Program \u2013 Sustainability in Action: Small Island State Ecological Systems, Culture and Society<\/strong>
      Spend Spring Break 2026 in Aruba earning 4 credits while exploring island ecosystems, culture, and renewable energy. The program runs March 21\u201329 in Aruba, with follow-up Zoom sessions in April.       Zoom info sessions<\/a> are coming up on Nov. 18, Dec. 3 and Jan. 3.<\/strong> The priority deadline to apply is Dec. 19 and the final deadline is Jan. 19.       THIS WEEK!\u00a0Study Abroad in South Africa: Honors Thesis Opportunity!<\/strong>
      Join OSU faculty and South African experts for a unique, research-based field course in Kruger National Park, South Africa\u00a0from Aug. 16\u2013Sept. 3, 2026.\u00a0Explore the intersections of human, animal and environmental health\u00a0through hands-on experiences with wildlife veterinarians, medical doctors and conservationists. This interdisciplinary program fulfills the One Health Certificate research requirement\u00a0and offers 9 credits\u00a0across VMB courses. Students can propose their own research projects and potentially expand them into an Honors Thesis.\u00a0Attend an info session to learn more<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Thursday, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. Dryden Hall 104\u00a0or\u00a0      via\u00a0Zoom<\/a><\/strong>.       THIS WEEK! <\/strong>Exploring Scotland’s Cultural Heritage: Historic Sites and 3D Scanning in Preservation<\/strong>
      Faculty-led Trip to Scotland: Edinburgh, Oban and Surrounding Area. Occurs within Summer Term Session 2: June 22 \u2013 July 17, 2026 (4 weeks)<\/strong>
      Discover the beauty and rich history of Scotland on this two-week faculty led program. Throughout the trip students will examine how 3D scanning technology is revolutionizing historic preservation, digitally capturing these important sites for future generations. The program begins in Edinburgh, where you\u2019ll explore famous landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle, St. Giles Cathedral, the underground streets of Real Mary King\u2019s, the National Museum of Scotland, and the Princess Street Gardens. One full day will include a train trip to Stirling Castle. During the second stage of our journey, you\u2019ll travel to Oban in the West Highlands. There you\u2019ll experience the grandeur of Glencoe, visit the Isle of Mull, tour Inveraray Castle and discover neolithic monuments in Kilmartin Glen. Finally, you\u2019ll travel back to Edinburgh where you will take day trips to other important sites, including St. Andrews, Linlithgow Palace, Craigmillar Castle, Blackness Castle, and Rosslyn Chapel, where scenes of the Da Vinci Code were filmed. Visits are also planned to the Scottish Parliament and Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the British monarch. This incredible program explores Scotland’s complex history and cutting-edge digital historic preservation methods. We hope you will join us!

      Honors College Emergency Grant
      <\/strong>The       Honors College Emergency Grant<\/a> supports students facing unexpected expenses related to housing and\/or meals, course materials or equipment for a class, healthcare and\/or mental healthcare costs, vehicle repairs necessary for travel to class, and\/or travel home for family emergencies. Grants are for up to $500<\/strong>, with a limit of two grants during your time in the HC. Only expenses related to the above list are eligible for emergency grant support, per university policy. Tuition or other general costs of enrollment are not eligible for funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      HC Experiential Learning Scholarship<\/u><\/strong>
      The Honors College Experiential Learning Scholarship supports student engagement in the honors thesis (thesis proposal required), attendance at professional or academic conferences, payment of non-tuition fees associated with honors courses, or participation in an honors study abroad program. Applications are reviewed based on need, and the maximum award is $750.       See here for additional information<\/a>. Applications can be submitted through ScholarDollars and evaluated on a rolling basis.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

      Are you interested in gaining hands-on research experience next summer? Join the AURA Summer Research Programs Informational Workshop happening this Wednesday, November 19th, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM in MU 104<\/strong> to learn more about summer research opportunities and how to build a competitive application.
      This session will provide an overview of undergraduate research programs across the country, including tips on finding the right program for your interests and preparing strong personal statements. You\u2019ll also learn about key deadlines, eligibility requirements, and how to make your application stand out to selection committees. Whether you are new to research or looking to expand your experience, this workshop will give you the tools and confidence to take the next step in your academic journey.

      Openings at Writing Center and Academic Support Center<\/u><\/strong>
      The\u00a0      OSU Writing Center plans to hire<\/a>\u00a0around 10-15 consultants to support their peers with a variety of writing projects, such as assignments for class, application materials, and scholarship essays. You don\u2019t need to identify as a writing expert to succeed in this position. They are looking for students who want to have conversations with other students about their writing, to listen and ask thoughtful questions, and to offer a reader\u2019s perspective.\u00a0
      Academic Success Center is also\u00a0      hiring Supplemental Instruction Leader<\/a>\u00a0positions.       Graduate Program in Biomedical Research at the University\u00a0of Oklahoma Health Campus<\/strong>
      The Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS) is a first-year, interdisciplinary program serving seven degree programs at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). Students will graduate with a PhD from one of the participating programs to prepare them for careers in biomedical sciences. OU Health Sciences Center is one of only a few comprehensive academic health centers in the nation. Internationally prominent faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge technology, and nearly $200 million in external funding combine to make GPiBS the leader in graduate education and research in Oklahoma.\u00a0The application for the 2026 GPiBS class opened on August 1st, 2025 with a priority deadline of December 1st, 2025<\/strong>. OUHSC is a comprehensive medical campus home to cutting edge research facilities and top-tier scientists.       Summer Research for Biomedical Undergrads at OUHSC<\/strong>
      The Graduate College at OU Health Sciences hosts five Summer Undergraduate Research Programs (SURP) aimed at preparing and encouraging undergraduate students to pursue careers in biomedical research or health-related sciences. SURP look forward to continuing 5 programs next summer (CURE, U-CARE, NARCH, OK-INBRE, and SURE). The SURP applications will open in November with a deadline of January 31st, 2026<\/strong>.
