THIS WEEK! <\/strong>Fall Undergraduate Research Showcases<\/strong>
Curious about what Honors College students are researching? Join us for the HC Undergraduate Research Showcases \u2014 dynamic online events where students present their thesis research in short, lightning-style talks. These showcases offer a glimpse into the wide range of topics our students explore and are a great way to get inspired, learn about research opportunities and connect with fellow students and faculty. After the presentations, stick around for breakout rooms with Q&A and conversation. All students, faculty, families and friends are welcome! The fall showcases will be held Wednesday, Oct. 29 and Monday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. PT via Zoom<\/strong>. RSVP: beav.es\/xu9<\/strong>

Honors College Family Weekend Bowling Night<\/strong>
Roll on into Famliy Weekend with the Honors College for family bowling night! On Friday, Nov. 7 from 5-7 p.m.,<\/strong> HC students are encouraged to bring their families to MU Lanes and Games<\/strong> for a fun evening. The cost is free for students and their family members. If students are interested in attending, you will need to sign up at beav.es\/xRi<\/strong>.

Honors College Dean and Friends Coffee Conversation \u2013 Mentors, serendipity, windows of opportunity, collaborations and credibility: Key ingredients for successful careers in research with George Kennedy, \u201970<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All honors students are invited to a Dean and Friends Conversation on Thurs, Nov 6 from 4:00-4:50 p.m. in LInC 345 (or over Zoom)<\/strong> with Dr. George Kennedy, \u201970, on \u201cMentors, serendipity, windows of opportunity, collaborations and credibility: Key ingredients for successful careers in research.\u201d Dr. Kennedy is a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Agriculture in the North Carolina State University Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. He turned his youthful fascination with biology and science, which he developed growing up o the south shore of Long Island, fishing and exploring coastal marshes and woodlots, into a career researching the ecology and management of insect pests of agricultural crops, insect-plant interactions, and the epidemiology and management of insect-vectored plant viruses. He received his B.S. in entomology from Oregon State and his Ph.D. from Cornell University, and he has authored or co-authored over 240 research publications and co-edited 5 books. Honors College Alumni Pathways Conversation \u2013 Research pathways in biomedicine with Chelsea Parker Harp, \u201912<\/u><\/strong>
All honors students are invited to meet over Zoom with HC alum Chelsea Parker Harp, \u201912, on Mon, Nov 11 from 4:00-4:50 p.m. Pacific Time over Zoom <\/strong>to learn more about her pathway into biomedical research. Chelsea received her H.B.S. in biochemistry and biophysics, with minors in chemistry and philosophy. She then earned a Ph.D. in 2018, studying a model of Multiple Sclerosis to study how different immune cells coordinate and perpetuate autoimmunity in the central nervous system. Chelsea is now a senior scientist at Seismic Tx, working to bring novel biologic therapies to the clinic for autoimmunity indications. Before this, she was a biology project representative for one of two lead assets targeting inflammatory pathways at Montai Health, a Flagship Pioneering Company in Cambridge, MA. She has also worked in the multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation research unity at Biogen, where she led a partnered program for PROTAC therapy targeting CNS resident inflammation. NEW! Honors College Dean and Friends Coffee Conversation \u2013 Leadership and Communication, with Tom Harvey<\/strong>
All honors students are invited to a Dean and Friends Conversation on Friday, November 14th from 3:00-3:50 p.m. in LInC 343 (or over Zoom)<\/strong> on “Cross-Functional Team Leadership and Communication,” with Tom Harvey<\/a>. Tom is the parent of a current Honors College student and is a Boeing Designated Expert in high-pressure systems integration in the Boeing Environmental Control System Design Center, where he leads and builds cross-functional teams to resolve high-priority technical issues and initiatives. He has his B.S. in mechanical engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Washington, focusing on management of technology programs. Tom has been with the Boeing Company since 1997 in a variety of roles and is a certified Project Management Professional and Boeing Lean Leader for Value Stream Mapping. For those attending this Dean and Friends event in person, coffee and snacks will be provided, and space is limited. RSVP for the event here<\/a>.

WEEKLY! HCSA Meeting<\/strong>
Join the Honors College Association (HCSA) for weekly club meetings! HCSA is a student-led club that plans activities for Honors College students. HCSA puts together social events, academic events, professional development events, and more. Join HCSA and help make great events happen! The Honors College Student Association holds general meetings every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. in LInC 268<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THIS WEEK! <\/strong>Help Create a Mural for the SLUG<\/strong>
Want to express your creativity? Join HC Student Designer Esme in decorating the SLUG chalkboard mural. Starting week 1, drop in between Noon\u20131:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays<\/strong> to help bring the mural to life! Interested in Public Policy and Advocacy? Apply for University Legislative Scholars!<\/strong>
The University Legislative Scholars<\/a> (ULS) program is a year-long experiential learning opportunity for students passionate about public policy, advocacy, and civic engagement. Offered Fall, Winter, and Spring, this in-person course allows students to: Engage directly with state and federal policy issues, learn how to advocate effectively in the Oregon legislative process and earn 2 credits per term that count toward your major. Ideal for 3rd and 4th year students, this program requires an application and offers a unique chance to connect classroom learning with real-world impact. Apply now<\/a> and be part of shaping policy in Oregon.

NEW & WEEKLY! <\/u><\/strong>Cedar in the SLUG!<\/strong>
Come down to the SLUG every Wednesday from 1-2 p.m.<\/strong> to visit with Cedar, the campus wellness dog who works with the Department of Safety!
