Dean and Friends Conversation \u2013 Leadership in Removing Barriers to Academic Success<\/strong>
All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends lunch conversation with Susan Castillo, \u201981, on Thurs, Apr. 10 from noon-12:50 p.m. in LInC 343<\/strong> on \u201cLeadership in Removing Barriers to Academic Success.\u201d Susan Castillo is a groundbreaking leader in Oregon politics and education policy. The granddaughter of Mexican immigrants and the daughter of a mother with only an eighth-grade education, she grew up seeing first-hand the connection between education and opportunity. After graduating from Oregon State in 1981 with a BA in communications, Susan had a 14-year career as a television journalist in Eugene. She then left reporting and served as a state senator for six years, becoming the first Hispanic woman to serve in the Oregon Legislature. She was subsequently elected statewide to three terms as Oregon Superintendent of Public Instruction, before she was recruited to be vice president of the west region for the non-profit organization, Project Lead the Way. In that role, she hired and managed a team that worked with schools, universities and industry leaders to help students and teachers across 12 states access high-quality STEM curriculum. NEW! Honors College Alumni Pathways Conversation on Following Your Own Career Path After Graduation with Kenan Heppe, \u201911<\/strong>
All Honors College students are invited to an Honors College Alumni Pathways remote conversation on Following Your Own Career Path After Graduation with honors alum Kenan Heppe, \u201911, on Mon, Apr. 21 from 4:00-4:50 p.m. PDT over Zoom<\/strong>. Kenan is known online as \u201cThe Chinese Tones Guy,\u201d with over a billion views of his Mandarin Chinese videos that both educate and entertain. In China, he’s known for being one of the only Western actors to land a lead role in a Chinese feature film (you can also see him as Mike Evans, the lead antagonist in the original Chinese version of The Three Body Problem, called “Three-Body,” on Amazon Prime). His talents and skills have taken him all over the world, but his background hasn’t always been performance. He graduated from Oregon State in 2011 with an Honors Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, and he was the first student in over 16 years to graduate with a 4.0 GPA in that major. Kenan believes OSU’s campus, courses and community helped him take advantage of the necessary skills to fuel his dreams. NEW! Dean and Friends Lunch on Multidisciplinary Collaboration in Artistic Projects and Installations with award-winning public artist Larry Kirkland<\/strong>
All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends lunch on multidisciplinary collaboration in artistic projects and installations with Larry Kirkland, \u201972, on Tuesday, April 29 from noon-12:50 p.m. PDT in LinC 345 and over Zoom<\/strong>. Larry is one of the leading public artists in the world today. He has collaborated with design professionals and community leaders to create art works to honor individuals, places, communities and events at locations across the world. He has created works for the Brown University Alpert School of Medicine; Pennsylvania Station in New York City; the University of Iowa Children\u2019s Hospital; the California Museum of Science in Los Angeles; several federal courthouses; the American Red Cross Headquarters; the National Academies of Science in Washington D.C.; Putra World Trade Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Hong Kong Central Station; and Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan. His memorials include works at the Civil Rights Garden in Atlantic City, the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington D.C., the Southwestern Pennsylvania World War II Memorial, and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta. His most recent work was a waterfront park on the Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington, completed in 2018, and he is currently creating a Peace Corps Commemorative Park adjacent to the U.S. Capitol. He has extensive work on public art selection and review panels, as well, and has written several art master plans. For his work, he\u2019s received a fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts and alumni recognition from Oregon State University. Larry graduated from the Oregon State University honors program that preceded the current Honors College with a degree in art. For this special Dean and Friends lunch conversation, Larry will discuss the collaborations between engineers, construction managers, artisans, researchers, writers, landscape architects, architects, lighting designers, and more that have been behind his projects, focusing on selected examples. The faculty Senate’s Carbon Commitment Committee<\/a> for promoting carbon neutrality efforts on campus has received an opportunity to create a campus-wide virtual training, using existing data and information from the Sustainability Office (e.g., current projects, greenhouse gas report information, etc.) in order to design and create an interactive online educational training module (e.g., similar to a short Canvas module you\u2019d see for class, with video, interaction, and quiz elements). The project would entail creating one or more modules including information on OSU efforts, what individual OSU community members can do, and interactive quizzes or other engaging components to increase training effectiveness. With guidance from two faculty members on the committee, the student has an opportunity to take a leading role in designing and creating this online training. The project should appeal to any student interested in sustainability, education, graphic design, or communication. We are looking for fresh ideas on how to engage, teach, and share information campus-wide with students to faculty on osu’s sustainability work and initiatives and how we can all contribute\u2014this project is a good opportunity for a student to have a lasting impact on the OSU community. The project must begin in spring or early summer term, but can extend beyond this if necessary\/desired. UReCA: The NCHC Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creativity Activity welcomes your research and creative submissions before June 1<\/strong>. UReCA is sponsored by the National Collegiate Honors Council, and is currently managed, edited and produced by a team of twenty-nine undergraduate students from each of the NCHC regions and a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. TODAY! MACO Student Award applications due<\/strong>
Marine and Coastal Opportunities (MACO) is pleased to announce the 2025 MACO Student Awards<\/a>. These awards recognize and reward OSU undergraduate students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship and pursuits consistent with the transdisciplinary, collaborative, experiential learning and outreach vision and mission of MACO. To advance understanding of the complex social, cultural, historical, and economic nature of the marine environment, preference will be given to students studying these human dimensions of the coasts and ocean. Up to $500 per award, current OSU undergraduate students may apply for this scholarship. The application deadline is Mar. 31<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NEW! <\/strong>Oregon Space Grant Consortium (OSGC) 2024-25 Dr. Nancy Squires Memorial Academic Achievement Awards Call for Applications<\/strong>
The Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium is pleased to release the Oregon Space Grant Consortium (OSGC) 2024-25 Dr. Nancy Squires Memorial Academic Achievement Awards Call for Applications. The Achievement Award is to honor Nancy Squires, who enthusiastically shared her passion for aerospace with all and inspired countless students to pursue a career in STEM. The following achievement awards programs are available for OSU students:
Undergraduate Achievement Award – $3,000
STEM Pre-Service Educator Achievement Award (MAT or MSEd students) – $5,000
Awards will be made in the following six categories:
STEM Education: Preparation to be a classroom teacher or an informal educator in a STEM field
Life Science: Includes biology, anatomy, astrobiology, zoology, botany, microbiology, physiology, biochemistry, neuroscience, and other related areas

Earn HC credit through Beavs Serve service-learning<\/strong>
Beavs Serve is a term-long, service-learning and experiential leadership opportunity for students who want to get engaged with the community. They are offering 3 different opportunities in the Spring! Honors College students who join one of these cohorts have the option to earn credit through our one credit HC 409 option. Students can register at beav.es\/cel<\/strong> and if they would like to earn an HC 409 credit, they can reach out to kara.goldman@oregonstate.edu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honors College Differential Tuition Scholarship<\/strong>
The Honors College recognizes that paying the differential tuition associated with HC enrollment can present a significant challenge. The Honors College Differential Tuition Scholarship is designed to make sure that students who are fully engaged with their HC education are not forced to withdraw due to the cost of enrollment in the college. Supported by donations from the Honors College community, Differential Tuition Scholarships are for $750-$1,560 for one academic year. The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. on Mon, Apr. 14<\/strong>. All students who wish to be considered for a 2025-2026 continuing student scholarship in the Honors College should apply to the Differential Tuition Scholarship through ScholarDollars. Only returning and continuing Honors College students who are making progress toward completion of Honors College degree requirements are eligible to receive a scholarship. Honors College Emergency Grant<\/strong>
The Honors College Emergency Grant<\/a> supports students facing unexpected expenses, including housing, meals, course materials, healthcare, vehicle repairs, and travel for family emergencies. Grants are up to $500 per term, with a limit of two grants during your time in the HC. Honors College differential tuition is not covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HC Experiential Learning Scholarship<\/u><\/strong>
The Honors College Experiential Learning Scholarship supports student engagement in the honors thesis (thesis proposal required), attendance at professional or academic conferences, payment of non-tuition fees associated with honors courses, or participation in an honors study abroad program. Applications are reviewed based on need, and the maximum award is $750. See here<\/a> for additional information. Applications can be submitted through ScholarDollars and evaluated on a rolling basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OSU Student Energy Analyst Position<\/strong>
Would you be interested in an on-campus job working with industry clients to reduce energy use and improve productivity, while applying what you are learning in your classes? The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) is looking for motivated student energy\/technical analysts to work part-time during the school year (10-15 hrs\/week) and during the summer (30-40 hrs\/week).<\/strong> The OSU EEC offers comprehensive, student-led, on-site energy and productivity assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers through a US Department of Energy funded program. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These engineering analyses and improvement recommendations are compiled into a report and delivered to the client. The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) program offers a year-long opportunity to engage with public policy at the state and federal levels. NEW! <\/strong>Invitation to Engage with Distinguished Leader in Sports Medicine, Dr. Kimberly Harmon \u2013 Three Exciting Events!<\/strong>
The College of Health and the Office of the Dean is pleased to present a series of events featuring Dr. Kimberly Harmon, our 2025 Bray Lecturer. Dr. Harmon serves as the head football team physician and sports medicine section head at the University of Washington and Deputy Chief Medical Director for the NHL. Her groundbreaking research on sudden cardiac death in athletes has shaped collegiate sports medicine, and she has provided key advisory insights to the NCAA, NFL, NHL, and NBA. Learn more about Dr. Harmon here. There will be three events on April 8-9, listed below. Besides the main lecture, there are two moderated forums \u2014 one especially designed for students on careers in healthcare and sports medicine, and one for faculty and graduate students on research. The Basic Needs Center (BNC)<\/a> has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more.
