The granddaughter of Mexican immigrants and the daughter of a mother with only an eighth-grade education, she grew up seeing first-hand the connection between education and opportunity. After graduating from Oregon State in 1981 with a BA in communications, Susan had a 14-year career as a television journalist in Eugene. She then left reporting and served as a state senator for six years, becoming the first Hispanic woman to serve in the Oregon Legislature. She was subsequently elected statewide to three terms as Oregon Superintendent of Public Instruction, before she was recruited to be vice president of the west region for the non-profit organization, Project Lead the Way. In that role, she hired and managed a team that worked with schools, universities and industry leaders to help students and teachers across 12 states access high-quality STEM curriculum. She retired in 2018 and now lives in Eugene. These awards recognize and reward OSU undergraduate students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship and pursuits consistent with the transdisciplinary, collaborative, experiential learning and outreach vision and mission of MACO. To advance understanding of the complex social, cultural, historical, and economic nature of the marine environment, preference will be given to students studying these human dimensions of the coasts and ocean. Up to $500 per award, current OSU undergraduate students may apply for this scholarship. The application deadline is <strong>Mar. 31<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Honors College Emergency Grant<\/strong><br>The <a href=\"https:\/\/honors.oregonstate.edu\/emergency-grant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Honors College Emergency Grant<\/a> supports students facing unexpected expenses, including housing, meals, course materials, healthcare, vehicle repairs, and travel for family emergencies. Grants are up to $500 per term, with a limit of two grants during your time in the HC. Honors College differential tuition is not covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>HC Experiential Learning Scholarship<\/u><\/strong><br>The Honors College Experiential Learning Scholarship supports student engagement in the honors thesis (thesis proposal required), attendance at professional or academic conferences, payment of non-tuition fees associated with honors courses, or participation in an honors study abroad program. Applications are reviewed based on need, and the maximum award is $750. For 6 weeks (July 13 &#8211; Aug 24), the selected OSU undergrad intern will be a part of a team of students who will be observing gray whales during their migration and collecting zooplankton samples daily to contribute data to our long-term project.&nbsp;<br>The ideal candidate for this position is a student interested in marine science\/oceanography\/ marine mammal science, enthusiastic about learning new skills, enjoys working in a team, able to work back-to-back field days and available to work at the OSU Port Orford Field station for the entire duration of the field season. The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) is looking for motivated student energy\/technical analysts to work <strong>part-time during the school year (10-15 hrs\/week) and during the summer (30-40 hrs\/week).<\/strong> The OSU EEC offers comprehensive, student-led, on-site energy and productivity assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers through a US Department of Energy funded program. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These engineering analyses and improvement recommendations are compiled into a report and delivered to the client. It is a great way to see many different industrial processes and learn about ways to save energy.
