{"id":9328,"date":"2024-06-10T15:00:58","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T22:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/honorslink\/?p=9328"},"modified":"2024-07-08T10:28:59","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T17:28:59","slug":"innovative-chemistry-lab-sparks-student-engagement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/honorslink\/2024\/06\/10\/innovative-chemistry-lab-sparks-student-engagement\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative Chemistry Lab Sparks Student Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>This article was originally published by<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/science.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/2024\/05\/innovative-chemistry-lab-sparks-student-engagement\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/science.oregonstate.edu\/impact\/2024\/05\/innovative-chemistry-lab-sparks-student-engagement\">IMPACT Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Hannah Ashton<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a while, laboratory courses can feel repetitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou do this, it makes this thing, and now you know how to make it,\u201d said Emily Frechette, an undergraduate&nbsp;Honors College&nbsp;student studying chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, one course stands out for its creative new approach to the age-old question, \u201cWhy does this matter?\u201d\u2014 a three-week general chemistry laboratory on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) pioneered at Oregon State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two members of the Department of Chemistry, Assistant Professor Kyriakos Stylianou and graduate student Karlie Bach, were interested in invigorating chemistry education and fostering student enthusiasm for research through hands-on laboratory experiences. They chose to introduce MOFs to general chemistry laboratories because they have immense potential in various research fields but are rarely introduced in lower-division courses. MOFs, composed of metal ions and organic ligands, exhibit porous structures and are used to capture hazardous molecules and detect organic contaminants in water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to Stylianou and Bach, the course receives incredibly positive student reviews and could help change the future of higher education. It provides unique opportunities for first-year and students with marginalized backgrounds to develop their scientific skills, hone their interests and create community bonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, Hispanic and African-American students are more likely to switch out of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) majors. By emphasizing skill development in the classroom, students who may be unable to participate in research opportunities due to financial constraints can still gain laboratory experience. The pair published this initiative and their findings in the Journal of Chemical Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you finally see that there are real world applications and you get to make something in the lab that you\u2019re not just going to throw away and never think about again, you actually feel like you did something productive and have a better grasp of the research community around you,\u201d Frechette said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/science.oregonstate.edu\/sites\/science.oregonstate.edu\/files\/styles\/1080_x_var\/public\/2024-05\/E35CA95A-749B-42B6-A074-FFCC611BB4E1_1_105_c.jpeg?itok=zU-8PnNM\" alt=\"A group of students posing for a photo after an event.\" style=\"width:550px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A cohort of MOF general chemistry laboratory students pose for a group picture following the poster session.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduate research prepares students for the highs and lows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily Frechette isn\u2019t the only student interested in the practical applications of classroom learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dylan Pyle, a third-year student studying biochemistry and biophysics, also knows the feeling of waiting for classroom knowledge to become tangible. However, during the lab developed by Stylianou and Bach, he found himself more enthusiastic, productive and knowledgeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn other classes, you don\u2019t see the application of what you do. You might perform a titration or electrochemistry or something similar, but then what? What difference does that make?\u201d Pyle said. \u201cHow can I apply this to something bigger and more useful? That\u2019s what the MOF lab showed you, which was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stylianou felt it was important to test students&#8217; critical thinking and make the experiments fun. He and Bach integrated six key academic qualities into the course, drawn from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences\u2019s Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The qualities include autonomy, skillset development, critical thinking, community, team effort and inclusivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe aimed for our students to take the lead in these experiments. Instead of having them conduct a single, straightforward experiment with uniform results, we encouraged diverse outcomes to teach them that failure is not necessarily negative but a part of their learning,\u201d Kyriakos said. \u201cThis is part of the process, and it reflects the nature of research. In the lab, about 90% of our attempts do not succeed, and we wanted our students to understand this reality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of the MOF laboratory, working in small groups, the students picked between four different MOFs to synthesize. Their task was to produce the chosen MOF they picked and utilize it for capturing a specific contaminant. The contaminants had different properties, including size and shape, and each one was only compatible with certain MOFs, allowing students to make unsuccessful selections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis experience will be beneficial for their future goals, regardless of their chosen path.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For both Frenchette and Pyle, failure was a huge part of the learning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOurs didn\u2019t end up doing what we wanted it to and that\u2019s how it is in research. Because when you\u2019re working on something, the chance of actually making something that works 100% of the time kind of defeats the purpose of research. There is so much trial and error, but I think it was a good learning opportunity,\u201d Frechette said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her group successfully synthesized ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8), a highly porous MOF, with the aim of testing its absorption capabilities with contaminants like methylene blue and iodine. Although it successfully absorbed methylene blue, the data yielded inconsistent results, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pyle\u2019s group synthesized another MOF, Cu(bpy)Cl, which is a non-porous looking material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe applied it to capture iodine. Looking back, we shouldn\u2019t have picked iodine, because it\u2019s too big of an atom. It didn\u2019t work for that, but maybe it captures other things super well. And I think that is what they were trying to get us to look into,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students had the opportunity to visit Kyriakos\u2019s Materials Discovery Laboratory (or MaD Lab), interact with graduate students and use laboratory equipment valued at more than several hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis experience will be beneficial for their future goals, regardless of their chosen path. Whether they continue in academia, industry or teaching, it is crucial for them not to feel intimidated by research and to learn how to present their scientific results,\u201d Kyriakos said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course culminated in a student poster session at the end of the term. Students presented their research findings in smaller groups to classmates and in a larger session attended by faculty, graduate students and senior undergraduates. This experience strengthened their writing, oral communication and presentation skills. Stylianou said the feedback from both the faculty and students was overwhelmingly positive. Students thought the event was helpful in exposing them to new modes of science communication, while faculty members were impressed by the professionalism and caliber of work demonstrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best part for Stylianou? That 80% of students reported that being able to control their own experiment helped them feel like a more active participant in the scientific process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe feedback we received was super positive. Some of them said, \u2018We didn&#8217;t know what undergraduate research meant and now we are highly interested in developing projects to better understand climate change, water pollution and purification and other areas.\u2019 That is awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article was originally published by&nbsp;IMPACT Magazine.
