Join the Honors College Student Association for an engaging discussion-style event about the challenges of equity in the evolving field of computer science. We will delve into various topics such as the potential risks of machine learning to encode harmful stereotypes, unequal representation in computer science and data privacy. We are joined by Puja Agrawal and Andrew Anderson, two graduate students who are doing research in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Food and beverages will be provided. The Roundhouse Foundation Marine Studies Innovation Lab Scholarship supports Oregon State University undergraduate students in their second year or more of study who are participating in a paid internship with the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) Innovation Lab (iLab)<\/a> in Newport, Oregon. There are up to three awards of $18,640<\/strong> given to scholars who qualify. Students must submit their application through OSU ScholarDollars<\/a>. The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) is looking for motivated student energy\/technical analysts to work part-time during the school year (10-12 hrs\/week) and during the summer (30-40 hrs\/week). Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These engineering analyses and improvement recommendations are compiled into a report and delivered to the client. NickelBlock Forecasting is a small company that publicly serves the central Gulf Coast with daily weather forecasts and an app. This is a remote internship focusing on Python development, HTML\/PHP\/ web development and App development. Interns have historically spent between 10 and 15 hours per week working on projects and helping out with brainstorming. Student Research Assistant and Student Programmer Job Opportunities<\/strong>
The student research assistant’s primary duties consist of conducting literary research, synthesizing literature, creating annotated bibliographies, preparing manuscripts, and attending weekly meetings. Knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics is preferred. The student programmer will program an app prototype for easy integration into Canvas, help create instructional videos, and provide research support. Skills preferred are knowledge of HTML\/CSS, Java, JavaScript, and python. Both jobs are an average of 20 hours a week for the 23-24 academic year. On Tuesday, May 16 at 12 p.m. in the MU Horizon Room<\/strong>, please join the Center for Global Health, Muslim Student Association, and Honors College for a conversation with renowned scholar Noam Chomsky about his recent book, Notes on Resistance<\/em>. Noam Chomsky is Institute Professor (emeritus) in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Laureate Professor of Linguistics and Agnese Nelms Haury Chair in the Program in Environment and Social Justice at University of Arizona. The event will discuss critical real-world issues, such as lessons we can learn from the pandemic, global challenges we are currently facing, and advice for student activism.
