NEW! The Non-Linear Approach to Medical School – A Discussion with HC alum Mickaila Johnston \u201998<\/strong>
All Honors College students are invited to a Zoom conversation with Honors College alum Mickaila Johnston on Monday, October 10 from 12 until 12:50<\/strong> on \u201cThe Non-Linear Approach to Medical School.\u201d Mickaila grew up in Bend, Oregon, and he enlisted in the Navy immediately after graduating in 1988. After a few years serving aboard submarines out of San Diego, he came to Oregon State, graduating in 1998 with his HBS in radiation health physics. He then matriculated to the military\u2019s medical school in Bethesda, Maryland (the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences). Since graduating with his MD, he\u2019s served in Naval Special Forces, Army Special Forces, on submarines, and in hospitals all around the world. NEW! <\/strong>Stage 3 Thesis Proposal Studio<\/strong>
Have a thesis mentor but need an extra nudge completing and submitting your thesis proposal? Befuddled by the thesis proposal, agreement or timeline? Stop by LInC 345 on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 5-6 p.m. to receive guidance, consult and learn from your peers about the thesis proposal process. Bring your ideas, questions and, if available, a draft of your proposal. Two other workshops will be offered in weeks 6 & 9 on Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THIS THURSDAY! Transfer Student Induction<\/strong>
HC Transfer Students! This is your official welcome to the Honors community and an opportunity to orient yourself to the various services and facilities offered. All incoming transfer HC students or current OSU students who are new to the HC are invited to attend and friends and family members are most welcome. Join us in LInC 343 on Thursday, September 29 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.<\/strong> for this event. The induction will offer light pastries and an opportunity to meet fellow transfer students and faculty and staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Honors College Academic Advising Canvas<\/a> page had some big updates this summer. Whether you are in your first term with the HC or graduating in the next term or two, this page has helpful information for every HC student. Updates include graduation and thesis submission checklists, resources for each thesis stage and task, drop-in advising schedule and more. HC Course Spotlights<\/strong>
– HC 409 Civic Engagement<\/strong>
The Honors College provides an opportunity for HC students to earn credit while serving and learning in their community. To earn one honors elective credit, commit to volunteering 2-3 hours per week in a local community agency. Read the materials on the Canvas course page provided by Community Engagement & Leadership to guide your experience. At the end of the term submit the reflection assignment on Canvas by 5 pm the Monday of finals week. Registration instructions: contact Leanna.Dillon@oregonstate.edu<\/a> to receive a learning agreement form, return the form signed by you and your site supervisor to receive an override to register for the course. Return the signed form and register for the course prior to the end of week 1. Graded: P\/N. Satisfies: HC Elective<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– HC 409 Conversants<\/strong>
The Honors College partners with the INTO OSU Cultural Ambassador Conversant Program (CACP) to provide an opportunity for honors students to earn credit while having a mutual cultural exchange with an international student. To earn one honors elective credit, you need to meet with an international student for an average of one hour per week throughout the term. Keep a log of the times and places of meetings and the topics discussed, and at the end of the term write a two-page reflection paper about the experience. Scholarship and Financial Aid Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

HC Differential Tuition Emergency Grant<\/strong>
The Honors College encourages students experiencing unusual financial challenges to apply<\/a> for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $500. This is not a scholarship and is designed to provide short-term, immediate support. Contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu<\/a> or an Honors College advisor<\/a> with questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HC Experiential Award Application<\/strong>
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply<\/a> for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. DEADLINE THIS SUNDAY! <\/strong>SCARC Student <\/strong>Archivist Job Opening<\/strong>
In partnership with the OSU Honors College, the Valley Library\u2019s Special Collections and Archives Research Center (SCARC) is excited to offer one Student Archivist position in its Public Services Unit.  This position will primarily focus on supporting Public Services faculty and staff in providing exceptional service to our researchers, both in person and remotely, and through work on special projects. No archives, library, or other heritage institution experience is necessary, and students of all disciplines are encouraged to apply! If you\u2019re interested in the position or have any questions, please email a current resume and 5-page writing sample to Anna Dvorak at Anna.Dvorak@oregonstate.edu<\/a>. The d<\/strong>eadline to apply is October 2, 2022.<\/strong>

Join the University Legislative Scholars Program<\/strong>
The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) is a year-long experiential learning program that enables students to engage in public policy issues at the state level while also increasing student advocacy in the Oregon legislative process. Research Assistants Needed for the Kindergarten Readiness Research Program<\/strong>
This research program has a federal grant to scale up and test the efficacy of the Red Light, Purple Light<\/a><\/em> (RLPL) movement and music self-regulation intervention in preschool children. Boeing Internships and Job <\/strong>Opportunities<\/strong>
Boeing has now posted regional requisitions for Summer 2023 engineering internships, as well as entry-level roles starting Winter\/Spring. These are \u201chub\u201d requisitions, meaning that they will be used to generate a candidate pool from which organizations across the company can hire. NEW! <\/strong>Marine Logo Design Contest<\/strong>
Are you artistic? Do you love science? Do you want to win $250? <\/strong>If any of these questions have piqued your interest, read on! For the last three years, fishermen along the Oregon coast have partnered with scientists at OSU to collect dissolved oxygen observations from inside their crab pots. We have been calling this project Fishermen Investigating Seasonal Hypoxia or FISH. You can learn more about the project at our website fishresearch.net<\/a>. We are looking for a logo that we can put on hats, stickers, etc. for the project. NEW! <\/strong>Submissions Needed for the Student Resources Digest!<\/strong>
The Student Resources Digest<\/em> mailings will be starting again soon. This effort is one way that we work collaboratively to make students aware of services and resources available to them. We collect submissions from campus partners, compile them into a digest, and mail them to you every two weeks of the term. Click here<\/a> for an example digest from last fall. We\u2019re now live and collecting submissions for fall term.
