The next speaker in the Honors College\u2019s Pathways to Career Leadership Dean and Friends series, Alan Blood, will join us in person on Thursday, May 5<\/strong> from 12-12:50 p.m.<\/strong> Alan is an OSU graduate, with degrees in computer engineering and electrical & electronics engineering, and he is a member of the OSU EECS Industry Advisory Board. He has been with Garmin since 2004, originally as an aviation embedded software engineer. He became general manager of Garmin AT, a subsidiary of Garmin International that designs and manufactures avionics equipment and supports a customer contact center, in 2021. Garmin AT, based in Salem, is one of the largest private employers in the mid-Willamette Valley. Alan is also on the Board of Directors for the Strategic Economic Development Corporation, which is focused on enhancing economic development in the region. The CS-ER team is very excited to share information with you about a new Google-sponsored scholarship. The new Women of Color in Tech scholarship<\/a> is intended to help raise awareness about the gender gap in tech and the barriers women of color face in entering the industry. The scholarship, administered by Scholly (a scholarship organization) will provide 20 scholarships for $10,000 each to Black, Latina and\/or Native senior high school or undergraduate women students who are currently pursuing a computing-related degree and wish to use the funding to support a computer science higher education degree. Financial Aid Opportunities<\/span><\/strong>
Financial aid and scholarships can make paying for school much easier, and now is the time to submit your FAFSA<\/a> (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or ORSAA<\/a> (Oregon Student Aid Application) and apply for scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year. Filing a FAFSA or ORSAA is something you need to do every year. We recommend you file as soon as possible. Here are some reasons why:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– OSU awarded more than $66 million in scholarships for the 2020-2021 academic year.
– The FAFSA is how you access all types of federal aid, including grants, loans and work study. Consider it a safety net \u2013 even if you never need these resources, it\u2019s good to have the option ready if your circumstances change.
– The FAFSA and ORSAA make you eligible for consideration for the Oregon Opportunity Grant<\/a> and other aid programs at OSU.
– Most types of aid have limited funding available, so the sooner you submit your FAFSA or ORSAA, the better your chances of receiving an award.

The OSU Advantage Accelerator team is looking for several Honors College interns for the academic year as well as over the summer. This program is focused on high-growth, traded sector startup and early-stage organizations. Interns assist in the development of new businesses through market research, competitive analysis, due diligence and more. Beaver Connect is looking for honors faculty mentors for the 2022-23 academic year! Faculty mentors will work alongside an honors undergraduate student serving as a peer mentor for a group of new HC students at our Corvallis campus next year. This program prioritizes applications from students of color, first-generation college students and those with high financial need entering OSU as new first-year or transfer students. They support students with issues concerning university policies, including the Student Code of Conduct, UHDS, grade appeals and other individual or group conflicts. As an intern, you would run the day-to-day tasks of the office, such as answering the phone\/email, greeting students when they come in, making appointments, maintaining files and other clerical tasks. In addition, after a year as an intern, student employees have the opportunity to train and be selected to serve as peer advocates, who work directly with their fellow students on conduct cases and other issues, providing support and resources. The Honors College is looking for Beaver Connect<\/a> peer mentors to help guide incoming honors students for the 2022-2023 academic year. Training will be offered during summer and fall, and official program duties will last from fall 2022 to spring 2023. Peer mentors will join a team of one faculty member and 3-4 incoming OSU honors students. The peer mentor experience is paid and has a lot to offer students, including boosting your leadership skills, improving your career profile, meeting new people and gaining a fulfilling experience. This one-year fellowship offers OSU students the opportunity to explore the intersection of the arts and sciences. Fellows will develop a creative project informed by engagement with lab or field research, be awarded a $1,000 stipend, have ongoing mentorship, and receive a residency at the Cabin at Shotpouch Creek. This research opportunity is being provided through the Kindergarten Readiness Research Program at OSU, and this opportunity will begin in the fall of 2022. They currently have federal grant to scale up and test the efficacy of their Red Light, Purple Light<\/a><\/em> (RLPL) movement and music self-regulation intervention in preschool children. PERIOD Feminine Hygiene Drive<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>
PERIOD at OSU, a local chapter of the national nonprofit organization PERIOD helping to end period poverty and stigma, will be holding a hygiene product drive<\/strong> around Corvallis for two weeks. This product drive will be held from April 23 to May 7<\/strong>. Donation boxes will be located around town inside Pollen, Natural Grocers, The Book Bin, The Domain Apartments, and Starbucks on 9th Street<\/strong>. Acceptable donations include packaged menstrual products like pads and tampons, deodorant, shampoo\/conditioner (especially travel size), body wash, shaving cream, razors and toothbrushes\/toothpaste. Products will be donated to the HSRC, as well as Community Outreach, Inc. and Vina Moses Center in Corvallis. Make a donation to help eradicate period poverty in the community!
