What she now loves about the university is the supportive, tight-knit communities it has allowed her to join \u2014 namely the NCAA D1 Women\u2019s Rowing team and the Honors College.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1811\/files\/2022\/09\/2021-04-27_WRow1D_004-768x512-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7680\" width=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1811\/files\/2022\/09\/2021-04-27_WRow1D_004-768x512-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1811\/files\/2022\/09\/2021-04-27_WRow1D_004-768x512-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>During the on-season, rowing becomes a part-time job with regular races and twenty hours of practice per week. The time-consuming nature of the sport has taught Hannah to manage her time well to stay on top of her thesis process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRowing does end up taking up most of my time,\u201d Hannah says. \u201cIt\u2019s made me a lot better at time management and general work ethic. You just have to get it done; you can\u2019t put stuff off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hannah\u2019s honors thesis project, Distribution of Bacterial Symbionts in Cold-Seep Vesicomyid Clams, investigates bacterial symbiotes in clam species surrounding deep-sea cold seeps. She first came across this research project while taking MB 314 Aquatic Microbiology with Dr. Andrew Thurber, who is currently her thesis mentor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just took [the class] on a whim as an elective, but that\u2019s when I first heard about my research,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel so excited every time I go to the lab.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hannah finds a lot of parallels between her rowing team and the Honors College community \u2014 both allow her to diversify her knowledge, both have a good support system of people who help her achieve her goals and both have allowed her to delve deeper into her interests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[I appreciate] having coaches and an athletic support staff with people who want you to succeed \u2014 similar to the Honors College in a way,\u201d Hannah says. \u201cIt\u2019s good to have people looking out for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Lucas Yao: Student Writer, Honors College<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Third-year honors biology major Hannah Robinson initially came to Oregon State for its wide selection of interesting majors.
