All interns are expected to write a project proposal, create a poster and present their project at both the MSI internship symposium and a public meeting or conference after the internship, all under the guidance of a mentor. Interns will also be required to participate in group check-ins, field trips, seminars, professional development and other group activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Internships will be in-person experiences with some remote work, and will last up to 10 weeks in length, starting around June 14, 2021. Cabildos Speaker Series: Dr. Carmen Thompson, ‘On American Whiteness and Anti-Blackness: Towards an Understanding of Race in America’<\/strong> Thompson is an independent scholar and historian of race and the Black experience. Dr. Thompson earned her Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and her master\u2019s degree in African American Studies from Columbia University in New York, where she was the recipient of the Zora Neale Hurston Award for Excellence in Writing by the Institute for Research in African American Studies for her M.A. thesis. She is a member of the editorial board of the peer-reviewed journal, the Oregon Historical Quarterly, where she co-edited and authored articles in the journal\u2019s regionally acclaimed special issue on White supremacy in Oregon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Currently, Dr. Thompson is a visiting scholar in the Black Studies department at Portland State University where she is working on her book “The Making of American Whiteness,” which examines the origins of Whiteness in America. Dr. Thompson has taught a wide range of courses on race and the Black experience at Portland Community College and Portland State University, including American slavery, Black feminism and race and racism. Dr. Leis is currently an associate professor at UC Irvine and the medical residency program director, as well as a plastic and hand surgeon. She was born in Sisters, Oregon to two artists, and as an undergraduate at Oregon State, she spent time in Zimbabwe and took a number of art classes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OSU Alumni Association and Community Engagement & Leadership are excited to accept applications for the Schoenstein Sustaining Excellence Scholarship. <\/strong>This fund was dedicated in order to provide scholarships for OSU students who are in their sophomore, junior or senior year<\/strong>, and who are actively involved in activities beyond coursework, demonstrating that they are committed to learning and contributing outside the classroom to the OSU and\/or local community. This scholarship currently accepts applications through OSU\u2019s Scholar Dollars<\/a> system. Students from all OSU campuses are eligible to apply. The Honors College recognizes that this may be a particularly challenging time for Honors College students and their families. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to apply<\/a> for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant. Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate.
Inability to pay Honors College differential tuition or other costs this term should not be the primary barrier to any student’s successful graduation from the college or continuation as an honors student.<\/strong><\/strong> Approved grants may be for the full HC differential tuition (currently $500) or a portion of it and are for one-term only. Grants will not be renewed for additional terms, but students can reapply. Typically, students can only receive two Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant during their time in the Honors College. The Marine Studies Initiative office is pleased to offer Summer 2021 internships focused on interdisciplinary topics of the ocean and coasts. Internship projects are still being finalized but options may center around citizen science in the Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve, coastal tourism, the seafood industry, public engagement via video and social media creation, ocean acidification awareness, marine reserve interpretation and the seafood business and industry. The OSU Energy Efficiency Center is looking for motivated Student Energy Analysts to work part-time during the school year for 10 to 12 hours per week, and during the summer for 30 to 40 hours per week. The OSU EEC offers comprehensive on-site assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers across the Northwest and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These events are a career panel experience exploring topics like identity, race and assimilation<\/strong> in the workplace with alumni and professionals who\u2019ve experienced them first-hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
The Music Technology and Production program at OSU produces an album during winter and spring terms. The MTP program is soliciting songwriters from around campus to send them a demo of an original song, which might be included in the album. Once they select the best tracks, each artist will be paired with students in the MTP program to produce the final project. This opportunity is open to all OSU students and participation from minorities and underrepresented groups is especially encouraged. This prize is open to currently enrolled undergraduate students at OSU! The literary work can be fiction, poetry or creative nonfiction written for a general audience. Submissions must be the student’s original work, typed no longer than 14 double-spaced pages for prose or 8 manuscript pages for poetry. On the first page, students must include their full name, year in school, preferred email address, current mailing address, phone number and student ID number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/strong>The Tourn\u00e9es Film Festival is a Francophone festival which seeks to bring French cinema to American university students. And this year, OSU gets to take part! The OSU Anthropology and French Clubs will be showing six Francophone films over the course of Winter and Spring term, the second one being this week on Thursday, February 11 at 6:00 p.m.<\/strong> with “Hyenas”.
The films are free<\/strong> and are available to any student who wishes to see them, and we want to make sure that everyone knows they are welcome to attend. There will also be a short 30 minute discussion about the films after our viewing, which will be moderated by professors in the French and Anthropology departments.
