Dean and Friends Conversation on Alternate Paths to Medical Careers and Openness to Change<br><\/strong>All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends conversation on Openness to Change and Alternate Paths to Medical Careers this&nbsp;<strong>Tuesday, Oct<\/strong>.<strong> 13<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>noon-1:00 p.m.<\/strong>&nbsp;with Sage Gustafson, a 2017 Honors College graduate in music. After graduating from OSU, Sage started work as a substitute teacher, planning to transition to medical school and become a doctor, inspired by her own health care experiences as an undergraduate. Working as a teacher, though, changed her perspective again as she learned more about how people interact with their own health and their community\u2019s health. She discovered the field of bioethics and through that, health policy, health law, and health system ethics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sage ended up going to Duke University in 2019 and earned her MA in bioethics and science policy. Now she is a bioethicist in the division of medical ethics at New York University. At this Dean and Friends, Sage will talk about her unique path to a career in health care, what has lead her through her changing interests, and some of the medical-related fields that are off the beaten path. Dean and Friends Conversation with Honors College Alumi Fellow Dr. SreyRam Kuy<br><\/strong>All Honors College students are invited to a special Dean and Friends event with SreyRam Kuy, the Honors College\u2019s 2020&nbsp;OSU Alumni Association Alumni <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.osualum.com\/s\/359\/16\/interior.aspx?sid=359&amp;gid=1001&amp;pgid=8824\" target=\"_blank\">Fellow<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<strong>Monday, Oct. 19, noon-1:00 p.m.<\/strong>&nbsp;Dr. Kuy graduated from OSU in 2000 with degrees in philosophy and microbiology. She went on to earn her MD at Oregon Health and Science University and her Master of Health Science degree at Yale University, where she also completed her fellowship. She has served as special advisor to the U.S. Veteran Affairs Secretary and Deputy Under-Secretary for Community Care, overseeing a $14.5 billion budget and 7,300 staff. Before this, she was Louisiana Medicaid\u2019s Chief Medical Officer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, she is a practicing general surgeon, healthcare executive, and quality improvement researcher at the Houston Veteran Affairs Medical Center and deputy chief medical officer for quality and safety for the South Central VA Health Care Network (VISN 16). She\u2019s a recipient of the American College of Surgeons Mary Edwards Walker Inspiring Women in Surgery Award, President George H.W. Bush\u2019s Daily Point of Light Award, OHSU\u2019s Early Career Achievement Alumni Award, L\u2019Or\u00e9al Paris\u2019s Women of Worth award,&nbsp;<em>Business Report<\/em>\u2019s 40 Under 40 Award, and was named by&nbsp;<em>Modern Healthcare<\/em>&nbsp;as one of the top Minority Healthcare Executives to Watch. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/honors.oregonstate.edu\/webform\/hc-differential-tuition-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apply<\/a> for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant. Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate.<strong>&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Inability to pay Honors College differential tuition or other costs this term should not be the primary barrier to any student&#8217;s successful graduation from the college or continuation as an honors student.<\/strong><\/strong>&nbsp;Approved grants may be for the full HC differential tuition (currently $500) or a portion of it and are for one-term only. Grants will not be renewed for additional terms, but students can reapply.&nbsp;<strong>Typically, students can only receive two Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant during their time in the Honors College.&nbsp;See the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oregonstate.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ef9fd782d80493cbb6ebdffe5&amp;id=70a6068235&amp;e=b3e4365442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">application<\/a>&nbsp;for additional information.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#d73f09\"><strong><strong>Professional Development<\/strong> and Job Opportunities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Student Budget Advisory Council Seeking Members<\/strong><br>The Student Budget Advisory Council is a student group that serves in an advisory role to the University Budget Committee. The SBAC gives students the chance to engage with peers to&nbsp;provide input, raise issues and ask questions about OSU\u2019s tuition, fees, finances and budget priorities. The University Budget Committee considers the students&#8217; input an important part of tuition and budget decision processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Associate Vice President for Budget &amp; Resource Planning convenes the Student Budget Advisory Council during the academic year. The Council meets every two weeks from October through May. The Council schedule contains evening meetings on the first and third Mondays of the month and are no more than 90 minutes in length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2020-2021 Council membership will consist of up to 15 student members. Student membership and participation is ideally for two consecutive years but can be for just one year. You could qualify either as a primary health coverage (if you are uninsured) or as secondary (if you already have private health insurance). OHP is free comprehensive health coverage for Oregonians who meet&nbsp;income requirements and other criteria. It covers check-ups, some dental care, prescriptions, labs, x-rays, hospital care and other services. It may even pay for rides to and from the doctor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now more than ever, it is critical for you to have adequate and affordable health coverage that meets your needs. If&nbsp;you don\u2019t have any health coverage, health coverage is too expensive for you, or you are covered by your parents&#8217; insurance but are still struggling with medical costs, you&nbsp;<strong>may&nbsp;<\/strong>qualify for the Oregon Health Plan, even if you already have private insurance. Through 10\/16\/20, access requires use of a code on keypads by the north doors. This code was emailed to all Corvallis campus honors students. Contact Kevin Stoller at&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:stollerk@oregonstate.edu\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stollerk@oregonstate.edu<\/a>&nbsp;if you need the information resent to you.&nbsp;HC students working in the LInC outside of building hours&nbsp;are restricted to the SLUG, HC classrooms and adjoining study spaces. When entering and exiting after hours, be sure external doors close and latch. Violation of rules, bringing in non-honors students after hours, or sharing the passcode may result in suspension of after-hours privileges for the entire HC community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capacity in the SLUG is restricted to 40 students, with check-in and check-out required. Students will be expected to clean up all surfaces they have been in contact with upon departure using the cleaning products provided. Please be courteous and patient and follow all posted guidelines or instructions from SLUG staff members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Honors College classrooms<\/strong> \u2013 LInC 343, 345, 350, and 360 \u2013 are available for student use during SLUG open hours. Accessing the spaces <strong>requires<\/strong> check-in and check-out in the SLUG and entails assuming cleaning responsibilities using the products provided. Classrooms can be reserved in advance for two-hour blocks in the SLUG. Capacity in these rooms is restricted to 9 (LInC 343 and 345) or 3 (LInC 350 and 360).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These policies and regulations will change if circumstances require adjustments, and some services may need to be cancelled.
