A Message From Dean Doolen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last week at the New Student Induction, I spoke to students and families about the importance of the Honors College community. The Honors College strives to form a community that supports students in the authentic expression of their identity and in the pursuit of their personal, academic, and professional goals. We work and grow together<\/strong>. We collaborate rather than compete<\/strong>. We succeed \u2013 and, yes, fail \u2013 together – and we are all the stronger for it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our current environment, many in our community can feel, at times, lonely, isolated, and unmotivated. It isn\u2019t just that we aren\u2019t able to congregate for social gatherings and special events. We\u2019ve also lost the daily, casual interactions we used to enjoy before or after class, in the hallways, or over lunch or coffee. These small, in-between moments are often key to binding communities together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In direct response to these issues, this week we are launching HC Conversation Clusters<\/strong>. All HC students will be assigned to a cluster and meet weekly on Zoom for a half hour. Our goal is for every honors student to feel included, connected, and cared for. Even if you don\u2019t think you\u2019ll benefit, I ask that you join in fully \u2013 because when everyone participates, everyone benefits<\/strong>. Greatness emerges from an environment that values, hears, and respects diverse voices and perspectives. So please listen, be open, and be giving of yourself and your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HCSA Events This Week<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Honors College Student Association – First Meeting THIS WEEK<\/strong>
Join HCSA and Honors X for an ice cream social Thursday, Oct. 1 from 7 – 8 p.m. via Zoom. <\/strong>Grab an ice cream from the SLUG, West, or Sackett freezer and come learn about leadership and involvement opportunities in the Honors College while meeting fellow students. We\u2019re looking for new students to join the leadership team and will be holding elections to fill open positions. The meeting ID is 922 1349 4129, and the password is HCSA<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HC A<\/strong>nnouncements and Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

NEW! Earn 2 HC elective credit by volunteering with the INTO OSU Conversant Program<\/strong>
The INTO OSU Conversant Program provides an opportunity for volunteers to help international students practice English conversation. It is a great way to connect to your international student peers, make new friends, and learn about other cultures! Spend one hour per week meeting remotely with your conversation partner. The program lasts one academic term and is an immensely rewarding experience for everyone involved. Applications<\/a> for Fall 2020 are due by midnight on Sunday, September 27th. Questions about the INTO OSU Conversant Program can be directed to Audra Wooldridge<\/a>. Contact Leanna Dillon<\/a> if you are planning to volunteer and are interested in earning HC elective credit by enrolling in the 1 credit HC 409 Conversant course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NEW! It\u2019s Coming\u2026 Conversation Clusters Kick-Off<\/strong>
With our community learning from a variety of locations, on-campus (in Corvallis, Bend, or Newport), remotely, or through Ecampus, all students will be assigned to an HC Conversation Cluster. Conversation Clusters will meet via Zoom for 30 minutes each week throughout the academic year to discuss topics, play games, and be in community together. On Tuesday, Sept. 29<\/strong>, your assigned Conversation Cluster will be sent to you via your OSU email. The Canvas page will monitor all cluster activities and track group participation. For this initial week, we\u2019ll focus on getting to know our one another, establishing our meeting day, time, format, and assign roles. The first 100 clusters to complete the initial assignment in canvas will receive dinner on us! <\/strong>Be sure to watch your email for your assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NEW! Navigating University: Remote Learning Tools<\/strong>
These sessions will be focused on navigating all of the remote learning tools available to you at OSU while also making sure you get to meet other students and classmates who live in our building. While we will spend some time talking about resources that you can use, the majority of our time will be spent hanging out and getting to meet everyone that lives in the hall! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
