However, it\u2019s one thing to do the research \u2013 it\u2019s entirely another to communicate the results to a broad audience. That\u2019s where senior honors Biochemistry and Molecular Biology student Victor \u201cTori\u201d Puoci comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tori is\nspending his summer working on his honors thesis here in Corvallis. \u201cThrough\nsupport from the College of Science <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.oregonstate.edu\/SUREscience\">Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)<\/a> program, I am working to expand the\naccessibility of science by creating a science communication podcast,\u201d Tori\nsays. \u201cI will be interviewing undergraduate students involved in research at\nOSU and creating episodes where we chat about their work, implications of the\nresearch, and the story of their involvement in science.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI did a year-long\ninternship in molecular biology lab research and really enjoyed it, but struggled\nwith trying to explain my work to people who weren&#8217;t somehow involved in the\nfield,\u201d Tori explains. He later took a class that introduced him to the field\nof science communication, and he added a certificate in Scientific, Technical,\nand Professional Communication to his degree. After further exploring the\nfield, Tori knew that he had found a topic for his honors thesis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is so\nmuch interesting research going on at OSU and in other organizations, but it is\noften difficult to understand this work if you don&#8217;t have considerable\nbackground knowledge,\u201d Tori says. \u201cBy making complex science topics easier to\nunderstand for those not trained in the field, we can help people understand\nscientific research that impacts their lives and empower them to make informed\ndecisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Be sure to keep an eye out for \u2018At This Point\u2019, the podcast that Tori is creating for his thesis; the first episodes are set for publication in late September.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Christopher McCracken: Student Media Writer, Honors College<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oregon State University researchers conduct groundbreaking work, innovating and driving science forward with each new discovery.
