June 9, 2016, HMSC Safety Awareness Forum Notes
Cascadia Rising Drill: The Cascadia Rising earthquake preparation drill is underway and has brought to light many interesting situations and future challenges. Multiple agencies and first responders are involved from Washington, Oregon, and California. HMSC’s Director and Program Manager have been participating; more detail will be reported to the forum in the near future.
ODF&W Parking Lot Markings: This lot needs markings for no parking and emergency areas, plus parking space stripes. This project will be done by HMSC facilities in the near future.
Parking:
- Parking on the grass at HMSC is allowed only on the south end of the library field adjacent to the housing area.
- No parking of non-university vehicles or boats should be occurring on the grassy areas surrounding the boat storage yard.
- The continuing practice of parking on the roadway adjacent to the EPA and Barry Fisher buildings restricts an important emergency route and limits the ability to conduct routine business. In addition, parking on the side of this access road could cause damage to the sea water system because some individuals are parking on top of the grates that cover and protect the system.
- Solutions are being considered for addressing these ongoing issues.
Student housing residence training: the Residence Assistant mentioned that taking FEMA training for clearing building re-entrance following a disaster may be helpful training for new residence assistants to take.
Approximately 53 students and a yet to be determined number of interns are arriving for the summer:
- Outside lighting is scheduled for inspection and repair.
- Discussion occurred about student/intern access to the library during hours when there is no OSU staff member on duty. This discussion began near the end of the meeting and will be continued.
- The Residence Assistant reported that the newly painted stripes on the housing parking lot and the overload parking area on the grass by the library will be a good solution for this summer’s program.
