PhD candidate Miriam F. Lipton received a 2021 PhD Research Support Grant from the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy. Lipton’s grant will be used to support access to and research within pharmaceutical trade catalogs for Lilly, Squibb, and Parke-Davis.

Lipton’s research examines the division of the United States and the Soviet Union along medical lines. In the 1940s and 1950s, the U.S. and Soviet Union responded to antibiotic resistance with different approaches. While the U.S. embraced antibiotic treatment for bacterial infections, the Soviet Union embraced bacteriophages. While the division might be attributable to Cold War tensions, Lipton seeks to contextualize the development of this scientific rift and the ways in which Cold War politics might have have affected the way the global public health crisis of resistance was handled.
The American Institute of the History of Pharmacy [AIHP] works alongside professionals, associations, academics, and schools alike to emphasize the importance of pharmaceutical history .

We do this by making available a wide variety of materials related to scholarly, professional, and popular history of pharmacy. We provide financial support for research designed to illuminate the history of the profession, the history of drug research and manufacturing, and the history of the uses of medicines in society.“

Lipton’s award will be used to cover research costs at the AIHP in Madison, WI, located at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Pharmacy.
