This is my initial post so I’ll talk about my job. I work as a software engineer for a company in the healthcare IT sector that uses a proprietary databases query language to query financial databases from medical patient encounters. The data extracted from the databases is then used to build analytics dashboards. We also build automations within the clients instances of the databases to perform different tasks related to the different parts of the lifecycle of a medical financial claim. It’s a very complex world at the intersection of accounting, healthcare, insurance, and SQL-style query languages. My job also involves navigating any number of middleware electronic medical records applications to view and/or verify different information and actions performed either in these applications or through a script built in the query language. Ultimately the impact of my company is reduced healthcare costs for the hospitals that we work with. As for me, my job offers plentiful opportunity for innovation, tinkering, creative problem solving, and collaboration. The systems we work in are complex enough that there’s a very high degree of collaboration that happens which is an aspect of my job that I have come to enjoy a lot.
