There is very little research or literature on the topic, and our industry tends to focus more on bud mites because they directly impact yield. Spider mites aren’t insects, they’re arachnids (class Arachnida, the same broad group as spiders) in the the subclass Acari (mites and ticks) in family Tetranychidae (spider mites). Adults spider mites have eight legs rather than six, and they don’t have wings or the three-part body segmentation typical of insects. Bud mites are from different mite families than spider mites (Eriophyidae and Phytoptidae).

Spider mites are small, usually under a millimeter, so they’re barely visible to the naked eye and are usually first noticed by their damage or webbing rather than the mites themselves. They feed by piercing individual plant cells with needle-like mouth parts and sucking out the contents. That cell-by-cell feeding is what produces the fine stippled or bronzed look on leaves.

They also reproduce very quickly, especially in hot, dry weather, going from egg to adult in as little as a week or two under warm conditions. That fast life cycle is why populations can go from unnoticeable to damaging in a short window, and why they’re generally considered a warm season, drought stress associated pest. Severe infestations on hazelnuts can cause substantial leaf drop. So they do not impact yield directly but they do hurt tree vitality.

Species

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is the typical hazelnut spider mite. Two- spotted spider mites pass through several life stages: egg, six legged larva, eight legged protonymph and deutonymph, and finally the adult. Adult females are typically pale to greenish yellow with two dark spots on the body, though spot intensity can vary with feeding activity and life stage. Fine webbing on the underside of leaves is often the clearest field sign of an active, established colony, since it typically appears once multiple generations are present together.

Recently, we became aware of another spider mite species affecting hazelnuts thanks to an observant field consultant. This species is the hazelnut mite, Tetranycopsis horridus. It has been diagnosed from Oregon in the recent past, but it is not included in historic pest management literature from OSU, which could indicate it is a recent invader from Europe. It was recorded as a new invader in Argentina on hazelnut in 2016.

How hazelnut mite is different: While it is a spider mite, unlike most other spider mites, it does not produce webbing and it is free roaming on the leaf. It is also large, dark brown, hairy, and relatively fast. It causes a different leaf symptom. Rather than bronzing from individual colonies on webbing, the whole leaf becomes stippled giving a distinct look to the tree. Please let me know if you see infestations of this mite, we have no idea how common it may be.

Western predatory mite Galendromus occidentalis feeding on bud mites within a hazelnut bud.
