After reviewing them, I would like to provide a brief review and summary of the two blockchains, Ethereum and Solana.

Ethereum, the most widely used blockchain system in the world today, has the ability to create and run applications, smart contracts, and tokens. These features have allowed Ethereum to succeed and prosper for a long time. Not only does Ethereum have its own cryptocurrency, Ether, but it also hosts other tokens by using the ERC-20 standard, and according to statistics, there are approximately over 460,000 token contracts based on ERC-20. The recent growth of NFT has also driven the popularity of Ethereum.

https://coinquora.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Ethereum-ETH-and-Solana-SOL-The-Top-Altcoins-of-August.jpg

Solana, which solves the problems of low transaction speed, high fees and scalability that exist in Ethereum, has become a major pain point to make up for the existence of Ethereum. It is currently one of the fastest programmable blockchains in the cryptocurrency space, enabling the Solana network to process up to 60,000 transactions per second through a new Proof of History (PoH) protocol, instead of Proof of Work (PoW) protocol. [1] Also, when it comes to running smart contracts, Ethereum’s EVM is single-threaded at runtime, which means that smart contracts need to be queued to run. On Solana, smart contracts can be run in parallel, meaning they can run simultaneously, which greatly improves efficiency and scalability. [2] However, Ethereum is also developing its Layer 2 solution to reduce its current disadvantages.

In terms of programming language, Solidity on Ethereum is based on some familiar high-level languages, such as C++, Python, etc., which makes it easier for developers to program to a certain extent, while Solana uses Rust, which is harder to learn but has a wide range of applications, such as the development of game engines, browser components, etc. To sum up, Solidity is more relevant, it exists for smart contracts created specifically for EVM, while Rust has a broader range of applications.

After understanding the pros and cons of Ether and Solana, I will discuss with the panelists on which blockchain to build our decentralized trading platform.

[1] https://www.yahoo.com/now/solana-one-ethereum-major-rivals-044511895.html

[2] https://pixelplex.io/blog/solana-vs-ethereum/

This week, based on the progress of our group project, I chose to explore which blockchain is best for building our decentralized exchange.
