Choosing a Capstone Project

Hello, my name is Nicolas (Nic) Cortes. I am enrolled in the Online Post-Baccalaureate Computer Science Program at Oregon State University. This is my last quarter before graduation and as my last class I am taking CS467 which is the Online Capstone Project. During this class, we form a team and select a project to complete and present at the end of the quarter.

Choosing a project makes me reminisce on all the classes I’ve taken so far and reminds me of the potential real world uses of the skills gained. It also makes me evaluate the comfort level that I have with each type of project and areas that I still have a lot to learn about. In order to narrow down my choices, I ranked the list of potential projects based on skill comfort level and level of interest on the concept. The web and mobile applications were at the top of my comfort list since one of my electives was Mobile Development and a lot of the other classes involved web development. The top of my level of interest list was comprised of the project management app because I could leverage some of the concepts to tool that I need at my current job. The trading algorithm project sounds super interesting because trading is a useful skill and if it works it could help to generate some side income. The other interesting apps were the fitness and pet apps because of their theme.

Regardless of the project that my team selects (or gets assigned), my goal is to have an end product that is functional, responsive, and useful to help me assess how much I’ve progressed in this area. We’ll see how it goes.
