While browsing the OSU Post-bacc reddit page, periodically, I’ve come across post from students asking for advise on how to manage their time, which class pairings will provide a manageable workload, and how to deal with feeling burnt-out. These questions apply not just to this program but in life in general, however, the flexibility and convenience of this program caters to working individuals that want to learn new skills to be able to change careers. During this program, I’ve learned many lessons and habits to help me balance my time and energy to continue working towards my goals.
There is a theme of student time management memes on internet that shows school, social life, and sleep arranged in a triangle with a caption saying that students can only pick two to do well on. It’s funny because it brings situations to memory and illustrates a common feeling among working students. During my second degree, I took an Organizational Behavior Business class that introduced us to a model that resonated with me regarding wellbeing. The model is based on the book called Wellbeing – The Five Essential Elements by Tom Rath and Jim Harter. It breaks down Wellbeing into five elements: Career Wellbeing, Physical Wellbeing, Social Wellbeing, Financial Wellbeing, and Community Wellbeing. I found certain habits that helped me keep my time and energy balanced to be able to continue my personal growth journey.
Career Wellbeing: School is one the best tools that we have to improve our career so the post-bacc program will provide the tools to help with our career growth. I find myself avoiding putting excessive amount of extra time at work but making sure that I am fully engaged while I am at work.
Physical Wellbeing: I try to work out at least twice a week. I used to work out to try to look good but now I do it to maintain my energy levels high. I realized when I am not active my body and my mind feel sluggish and low on energy so now I try to allocate time accordingly.
Financial Wellbeing: I think school will help with this area in the future but for now I’ve been educating myself about investing, fully utilizing my company’s 401K match, and learning how to better manage my finances.
Social and Community Wellbeing: Usually school takes time away from this one so I try to make sure that I connect with people at work and create a sense of community if possible.
These habits have helped me to keep my physical, mental, and emotional energy up to be able to continue my personal growth.
