Week 1- Blog Post: Job Application Experience

- Describe your experiences from the perspective of an applicant for the last job for which you applied.
I recently had an interview with Beacon Hill. They are a recruiting firm and have several offices around the country. I first met the representative at the College of Business Job Fair last term. I brought my resume and gave it to them there so they could know a bit about me before my interview. It was really nice to connect with her there knowing she was looking to hire people. After our first interaction, she offered me an interview in the same week! It was great to be able to sit down with her and get to know her and the job a bit better. I even brought another copy of my resume to the interview process just in case she forgot it or something.
- Explain how your experiences during the job application process shaped your impression of the job you were applying for and your desire to work there (or in some cases to not work there).
When I first met the representative at the career fair, right off the bat I knew she could be someone I would connect really well with. Then during my interview, I realized we had a lot in common. I went into the interview nervous and dressed in appropriate attire ready to answer tough interview questions. I practiced by my roommates asking interview questions and answering them as if we were in a mock interview. I practiced stating my strengths and weaknesses, a little bit about my hobbies, and why I would be a good fit for Beacon Hill. The interview went not at all like I was expecting. It was extremely laid back and informal. We started talking about my home town and from there the conversation flowed. She did not ask me traditional interview questions but rather cared about who I was as a person. By the end of the interview, I knew this would be a really fun place for me to work. She told me it was on me to email her with my decision to go forth with the company and go through the second interview process. Unfortunately, I still need more credit hours for an internship during the summer so I had to decline the offer of going to the second interview and ultimately starting this job. I was extremely disappointed and honestly frustrated with OSU that I needed an internship before accepting this career.
