{"id":730,"date":"2011-10-03T08:37:43","date_gmt":"2011-10-03T15:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glencora.org\/?p=730"},"modified":"2012-01-28T00:11:06","modified_gmt":"2012-01-28T00:11:06","slug":"my-office-hours-are-gender-balanced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/glencora\/2011\/10\/03\/my-office-hours-are-gender-balanced\/","title":{"rendered":"My office hours are gender balanced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If I didn&#8217;t see the students sitting in the lecture room while I taught and only knew who I was teaching to by the students who speak to me after class, in the hallways or in my office hours, I would think the gender ratio was <em>at least<\/em> balanced in computer science.<\/p>\n<p>Overwhelmingly, one-on-one, my students are female. \u00a0I can be even more anecdotal. \u00a0Most students ask me questions immediately after class, rather than during office hours &#8211; I encourage this, and loiter outside the classroom, taking questions. \u00a0Inevitably, I get several male students first. \u00a0Then, <em>after<\/em>, I get just as many, if not more, female students. \u00a0Are the male students more aggressive?
