{"id":516,"date":"2010-08-14T16:15:14","date_gmt":"2010-08-14T23:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glencora.org\/?p=516"},"modified":"2012-01-28T23:09:30","modified_gmt":"2012-01-28T23:09:30","slug":"experience-theory-project-and-prezi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/glencora\/2010\/08\/14\/experience-theory-project-and-prezi\/","title":{"rendered":"Experience Theory Project and Prezi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m participating in the <a href=\"http:\/\/etp.cs.washington.edu\/\">Experience Theory Project<\/a> at the University of Washington right now.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>ETP is an event for undergraduates with talent and interest in theoretical computer science, sponsored by the theory groups at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.washington.edu\/research\/computation\/\">University of Washington<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/groups\/theory\/\">Microsoft Research<\/a>. The purpose of the event is to exchange ideas about exciting results and research directions in theoretical computer science, and enjoy Seattle in all its summer glory.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Anna Karlin is organizing and asked me to join in. \u00a0It&#8217;s a great group of students and a great excuse to spend some time at UW and MSR. \u00a0There have been about 15 technical talks aimed at senior-year, bright undergrads.<sup>1 <\/sup>In an attempt to minimize the time I spend designing talks, I used a new presentation method &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/prezi.com\/\">Prezi<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;ve used it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glencora.org\/silent-glen-speaks\/surely-my-bicycle\/\">before<\/a> and was perhaps a little too excited about it. As critics would point out, I didn&#8217;t take full advantage of Prezi: \u00a0I designed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.engr.oregonstate.edu\/~glencora\/other\/planar-poster.pdf\">this poster<\/a><sup>2<\/sup> in Illustrator with a tablet, exported to Prezi as swf and then added &#8220;frames&#8221; in order to navigate around the poster. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Prezi was frustrating to work with, figures would have to be uploaded one by one, jpegs cannot be uploaded in high enough resolution to zoom in on, uploading a pdf plain failed. \u00a0I was worried about (lack of) reusability. \u00a0At least now I have a reusable poster.<\/p>\n<div class=\"prezi-player\"><!-- .prezi-player { width: 550px; } .prezi-player-links { text-align: center; } --><object id=\"prezi_a7tdidihv7pn\" width=\"550\" height=\"400\"><param name=\"name\" value=\"prezi_a7tdidihv7pn\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"bgcolor\" value=\"#ffffff\" \/><param name=\"flashvars\" value=\"prezi_id=a7tdidihv7pn&amp;lock_to_path=0&amp;color=ffffff&amp;autoplay=no&amp;autohide_ctrls=0\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/prezi.com\/bin\/preziloader.swf\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"550\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/prezi.com\/bin\/preziloader.swf\" name=\"prezi_a7tdidihv7pn\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" bgcolor=\"#ffffff\" flashvars=\"prezi_id=a7tdidihv7pn&amp;lock_to_path=0&amp;color=ffffff&amp;autoplay=no&amp;autohide_ctrls=0\"><\/embed><\/object><\/div>\n<div class=\"prezi-player\">There were a few technical issues: I couldn&#8217;t use a remote to run the presentation; I forgot to manually set the &#8220;sleep&#8221; time on my laptop (accustomed to this being automatically set by Keynote); manual navigation sometimes did unexpected, non-deterministic things. \u00a0Prezi was cute and flashy, but I wouldn&#8217;t use it for a longer talk or a more technical talk. \u00a0Overall, I wouldn&#8217;t recommend it.<\/div>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup> The level of the talks, at least on topics of which I am the least informed, was perfect for me &#8211; a gentle introduction. \u00a0Disconcerting, maybe. \u00a0Perhaps I am just too slow to follow the standard (short) technical talk in our field.<br \/>\n<sup>2<\/sup> Which I hope to print out on a plotter and put up in my department.
