{"id":175,"date":"2009-09-29T09:58:12","date_gmt":"2009-09-29T16:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glencora.org\/?p=175"},"modified":"2009-09-29T09:58:12","modified_gmt":"2009-09-29T16:58:12","slug":"feminism-is-still-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/glencora\/2009\/09\/29\/feminism-is-still-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Feminism is still needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many blogs have already piped up on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.co.uk\/story.asp?sectioncode=26&amp;storycode=408135&amp;c=2\">THE article<\/a> on the deadly sins of academia (thanks to Gordon Wilfong for first directing me to it). \u00a0The article isn&#8217;t entirely at fault and meant to be in good fun. \u00a0The section on <em>Lust<\/em>, though,\u00a0by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buckingham.ac.uk\/publicity\/dofe\/kealey.html\">Terence Kealey<\/a>, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buckingham contains\u00a0such gems that I am sure I need not editorialize:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 18px;margin-left: 0px;font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;padding: 0px\">Normal girls &#8211; more interested in abs than in labs, more interested in pecs than specs, more interested in triceps than tripos &#8211; will abjure their lecturers for the company of their peers, but nonetheless, most male lecturers know that, most years, there will be a girl in class who flashes her admiration and who asks for advice on her essays. What to do?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 18px;margin-left: 0px;font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;padding: 0px\">Enjoy her! She&#8217;s a perk.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 18px;margin-left: 0px;font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;padding: 0px\">I would like to point out, though, the language he uses in his rant:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 18px;margin-left: 0px;font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;padding: 0px\">[T]he universities are where the male scholars and the female acolytes are. [&#8230;] The fault lies with the females.
