Stress Is A Silent Progressive Killer

Reflecting upon my successes and failures this year I decided to take three tests to help determine my stress levels. I have always considered my stressful job and lifestyle to be beneficial as I feel I “thrive under stress” and it helps push me forward as I don’t consider failure or mediocrity a possibility. I measure my success primarily in monetary/superficial money and assets while part of my matrices include being a good family member and friend. The tests were not surprising when they claimed I am in the top percentile for having a major stress related health breakdown in the next 2 years, I am generally impatient but very ambitious. I see many areas of improvement for myself especially in understanding and considering other’s feelings and how thankfully not everyone has a thought process like mine.

Industry Problems & Modern Solutions

The construction industry has always been known as a high speed, high stress, high skill level required trade. While this industry is vast in the context, expectations, and sacrifices pertaining to the specific work an individual does there is many common stressors. In fact a study states “70%-80% of construction industry professionals experienced depression or anxiety with 97% of construction workers reporting that they were experiencing stress throughout 2020” (Fairbrother) Personally I have firsthand experienced some of the issues such as; inequality, feeling of inadequacy/failure, crazy hours, travel, being separated from family & friends, lack of proper training/high expectations. Fortunately society and the industry has realized these downfalls within the industry and companies have begun to take steps in helping employees be healthier with a heavy emphasis on mental health. They have been strict about protective equipment for eyes, respiratory, hands for years but mental health has a stigma that men shouldn’t need help which has unfortunately resulted in a high suicide rate. Companies have been more open with offering mental health training and rehab for people who have drug, alcohol, and gambling problems. They have also improved onboarding/training. Project schedules and unions try to stick to 40 hours a week unless there is a significant need for overtime.

My Improvements

After living this dream/nightmare I will say I have not chosen a job I have picked a lifestyle. I have and will continue to spend more time at work with collogues than I do with family. I am committed to adding value to the workplace and since I am in a leadership role now I have more control and realize I set attitude expectations for the crew. I challenge everyone to be patient with less experienced people and understanding that people have lives outside of work. I demand respect and solid effort from all people and would like an open line of communication always! I try to look for the positivity in everything and not get overwhelmed by small inconveniences at work. I would like to be able to grant employees time off whenever they would like.
