But that\u2019s not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many organizations use a job description as a guideline or outline that will be \u201cfilled in when <em>they<\/em> start working\u201d, and \u201cwe\u2019ll flush out their skillsets and then add it to the job description\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what happened at an organization I worked at around 12 years ago. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"612\" height=\"612\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/8267\/files\/2024\/10\/istockphoto-1158202021-612x612-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6\" style=\"width:329px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/8267\/files\/2024\/10\/istockphoto-1158202021-612x612-2.jpg 612w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/8267\/files\/2024\/10\/istockphoto-1158202021-612x612-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/8267\/files\/2024\/10\/istockphoto-1158202021-612x612-2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A detailed job posting with an even more detailed job description showed all the different things the position would be doing \u2013 to help one committee (of more than 20) within a membership organization. What they hired was someone who could do everything in the whole job description in 2 hours a week. Then what? Then you had someone being paid to do 40 hours of work sitting around finding more things for themselves to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the fix?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>~ Try it out with someone else, ask other staff to look at the job to see if they can understand what that person would be doing \u2013 you\u2019d be surprised how quickly people would say \u2013 \u201cis that all they do?\u201c ~<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>~ Consider a job description that maps out how much time in a day\/week\/month that task would be related to their job. ~<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>~ Be specific as to the role and its relevancy to the organization. ~<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is \u2013 the individual was a professional. They took on this job, plus added multiple other duties to fill their time.
