{"id":494,"date":"2016-01-09T00:59:35","date_gmt":"2016-01-09T00:59:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/gemmlab\/?p=494"},"modified":"2016-01-09T08:57:51","modified_gmt":"2016-01-09T08:57:51","slug":"entering-in-the-world-of-photogrammetry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/gemmlab\/2016\/01\/09\/entering-in-the-world-of-photogrammetry\/","title":{"rendered":"Entering in the world of Photogrammetry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Leila Lemos, Ph.D. Student, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, OSU.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hello everybody with the first post of the year from the GEMM Lab!!<\/p>\n<p>The year of 2016 has just begun and with that comes new projects and great expectations about my PhD project.<\/p>\n<p>During this week I am going to learn how to measure gray whales (<em>Eschrichtius robustus<\/em>) using aerial images that were captured during last summer\u2019s pilot field season along the Oregon Coast led by my advisor Dr. Leigh Torres.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Torres aimed to test the methodology for our project that will combine these whales\u2019 measurements data with hormonal analysis to assess the overall health of gray whales.<\/p>\n<p>The aerial videos and images were taken through an unmanned aerial system (UAS) that is composed of a flying unit and an on-board camera. An example of this system can be seen below, in Figure 1.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/gemmlab\/files\/2016\/01\/Lt-recaptures-drone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-495 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/gemmlab\/files\/2016\/01\/Lt-recaptures-drone.jpg\" alt=\"Lt%20recaptures%20drone\" width=\"873\" height=\"1365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2115\/files\/2016\/01\/Lt-recaptures-drone.jpg 873w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2115\/files\/2016\/01\/Lt-recaptures-drone-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2115\/files\/2016\/01\/Lt-recaptures-drone-655x1024.jpg 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 873px) 100vw, 873px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Figure 1: Dr. Leigh Torres re-captures the UAS (DJI Phantom 3) while at sea after an over flight of a gray whale.<\/p>\n<p>Source: Leigh Torres, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The measurement of the whales through aerial images is known as \u201cphotogrammetry\u201d and this method can give us important information about the whales through this\u00a0unique overhead perspective, such as individual identification using natural markings, sex and reproductive condition based on size estimation, and individual-based changes in growth, health and body condition (nutritive condition) over time through replicate samples.<\/p>\n<p>Perryman and Lynn (2002) used images captured from planes and adopted four different measurements for each photographed whale: the total length (L<sub>t<\/sub>), the width of the whale at its widest point (W<sub>m<\/sub>), the distance from the tip of the rostrum to the widest\u00a0point (RW<sub>m<\/sub>), and the width of the flukes (F<sub>w<\/sub>), as shown in the Figure 2.\u00a0Using these methods, this study was able to identify pregnant females and found that southbound migrating gray whales were significantly wider than northbound whales.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/gemmlab\/files\/2016\/01\/Captura-de-Tela-2016-01-08-\u00e0s-4.49.47-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-496\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/gemmlab\/files\/2016\/01\/Captura-de-Tela-2016-01-08-\u00e0s-4.49.47-PM.png\" alt=\"Captura de Tela 2016-01-08 \u00e0s 4.49.47 PM\" width=\"248\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2115\/files\/2016\/01\/Captura-de-Tela-2016-01-08-\u00e0s-4.49.47-PM.png 248w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2115\/files\/2016\/01\/Captura-de-Tela-2016-01-08-\u00e0s-4.49.47-PM-161x300.png 161w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Figure 2: Features measured on vertical photographs in gray whales<\/p>\n<p>Source: Perryman and Lynn, 2002.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We plan to build upon this established method by measuring width at multiple points along the whale\u2019s body, in addition to the total length.<\/p>\n<p>Images taken of the same individuals during different temporal periods can reveal variations in their body condition.<\/p>\n<p>We aim to collect images of the same individuals at the beginning and end of a foraging season and hypothesize that due to weight gain and increased blubber mass the width of animals will increase. Additionally, when images of indiviudals are compared between years we hypothesize that body condition changes due to major events such as pregnancy, entanglements, skin lesions, and predation events, will be linked to changes in body condition.<\/p>\n<p>We will relate these photogrammetry data to hormonal data on stress and reproductive status in order to describe individual stress variation as it relates to size, health, location, year, reproductive status and ocean noise levels.<\/p>\n<p>During the pilot field season, six gray whale fecal samples were collected and hormonal levels in these samples were analyzed showing positive results.
