Having accurate job descriptions is very important. Job descriptions need to be very clear and concise of what is needed from a person to fulfill the position. If job descriptions are not accurate a person may be confused and will leave job, giving the company a high turnover rate. I did my first internship this last summer with a general contractor up in Portland. I was a project engineer intern. This was a completely new experience for me and I really did not know what I’d be getting into. The job description was very vague and at first it made me question if I should be signing up for it, I felt like I should have had prior knowledge before applying for the internship. Part of the reason they did this is because they had many interns coming in to work in different positions within the company. Some were working in marketing, some in pre construction and others in their special project group. I was working in their buildings department. I didn’t have much of a clue what I was doing till my first day when I met the team I was going to be working with. They sat me down and showed me how to post RFI’s to drawings and how to go through the submittal process, the internship turned out great overall. But one thing that would have been nice for them to do is have multiple different types of internships posted with more accurate descriptions of what each one would be doing. It would help relief some of the insecurities going into something so very new. But this can also be difficult to do because things are constantly changing in the environment, the ways things are done in construction are constantly innovating and new methods are being developed on a very regular basis.
