WEEK 4 – Blog Assignment

Job Descriptions are something that are a crucial part of every job but are hard to continuously maintain depending on the positions being discussed. Job Descriptions are crucial because they allow prospective employees to better understand the positions they are applying for. This allows the employees to filter out the jobs they do not feel align with their personal values and beliefs and helps the company save time by not having to sift through excessive applications of individuals who are not best suited for the positions being offered or the company as a whole.

These descriptions can be hard to maintain because depending on the positions being described, tasks and duties may vary continuously. Sometimes jobs are also hard to describe without having expert knowledge of the topic. Another challenge that arises with job descriptions are when they are not an accurate representation of the position. I have experienced this before where I applied to a job with a certain list of tasks and responsibilities in mind but when I got to the job, it was as if it was a different position entirely. Job descriptions do not need to provide a holistic view on the position, but should include key aspects and touch on every area the employee will be expected to be responsible for.

Some ways to overcome these challenges include doing more regular analysis’ on job descriptions and updating future job postings so that they are a more accurate representation of what the individual will be expected to do. Companies need to ensure that these descriptions are clear and detailed without being overbearing.

As we saw in the simulation, it may be the most beneficial to analyze all job descriptions to reduce confusion for prospective and current employees. Only focusing on certain departments is not beneficial to the company as a whole and will only provide successful outcomes for that division of the company.
