Posture Check

I think programmers have a historically bad reputation in regards to physical health, but I also think that view is changing.

A quick Google Images search of “programmer stereotype” nets you a great number of pictures featuring individuals that fall under the clichéd ‘nerdy’ depiction of programmers often seen in movies, shows, and cartoons. While I do think everyone should be comfortable in their own skin, I don’t think this portrayal is healthy to the profession or those in it. The notion that programmers are either slouched or hunched over their computers generates a stigma around computer science. These generalizations could prevent would-be programmers from entering the field in order to avoid such a depiction. For those in the profession, it places them in an often insulting typecast. I might be a glasses wearing nerd who codes for a living, but that doesn’t mean I automatically fall into the dichotomy of being either grossly overweight or slenderly underweight.

That said, I’m sure there is truth to the generalization – or at least there used to be. Studies and careers in programming are immensely sedentary and I can certainly see how such a desk-bound vocation could lead to programmers getting out of shape. Knowing this when starting my adventures in computer science, I resolved to always make sure I exercise and stay active. I am also of the opinion that exercise is essential to maintaining a well-functioning mind. With the brain being our biggest tool in programming, I think it’s immensely important to workout on a regular basis.

It helps that during my education and career I have met like-minded individuals. To me, it seems that programmers are becoming more fitness-conscious and are breaking the mold of the out-of-shape nerd.
