They forced employers to raise wages and gave the working class adequate pay for their efforts. Labor Unions have now become something that is not especially needed in an economy that pays workers fairly. Unions still are important in many situations and can be beneficial for many people. For this I talked with my friend who is a directional driller and has been working for the same company for four years. Just two years ago he decided to join the labor union for the company and since then his wages have gone up and his hours have become more consistent.

This week’s materials and article about why unions are so worried about right-to-work laws sparked my interest. After reading this article I have several points that disagree with what the article states. Right-to-work laws are not some evil scheme to pay employees less in my opinion. As someone who works for a non-union company, I get paid more than any union does for the same job and I have just as many benefits and room to grow. Not every company is like this, however, which I acknowledge, but employees should be able to decide if they want to be in a union or not. I think that it is ethically wrong to charge people the same fees for not being in a union as a legal punishment for not conforming. I know if I was in a situation where I didn’t want to join the union but I was losing the money I was working hard for I would leave the company in a heartbeat. Labor unions are important for many industries and help improve employee’s quality of working conditions and can improve their wages so there are situations where labor unions can fix things. The major flaw I see in the article’s view is that if you have the option to join a union, and if they are all so great and beneficial then why would someone not join and why would right-to-work laws be an issue?

Citations:

Why unions are so worried about right-to-work laws.
