Week 9 – Stress & Coping

Based on the results, I learned that while I approach relationships with trust and openness, I struggle with being impatient or frustrated with everyone when under stress. I don’t have these moments often, but they can affect how I interact with others and impact both my mental well-being and professional relationships. One key takeaway is that I use problem-focused coping strategies, which can be effective when stressors are within my control. I need to be careful about applying this strategy to situations where I have little or no control because it can lead to more frustration or burnout.

To better manage stress as I progress in my professional career, I can do a couple of things. First, I can work on practicing breathing techniques to use to manage frustration in high-pressure situations. Second, I can incorporate exercise, eating well, and getting enough sleep every night. Taking care of myself and building a healthy routine will help me be ready to tackle anything. Lastly, building a strong support network will help me feel supported during stressful periods.

Organizations are taking many steps to help their employees manage their health and cope with stress. Many now offer mental health resources, telemedicine, and wellness initiatives that include access to fitness programs, nutrition counseling, and mindfulness workshops. Wu (2021) mentions that workplace mental health support is getting attention from organizations, but the programs have a low utilization rate. This is concerning, especially since burnout and chronic stress are prevalent. According to Wilkie (2020), training managers to recognize employee stress and encourage them to take breaks can create a more supportive work culture. They mentioned that managers using the resources themselves can set an example to their employees to also use them. These strategies will help reduce stress, improve morale, and support overall employee well-being.
