My Favorite Project

My favorite Capstone project is “extracting financial data from corporate filings with the SEC”, or a software that looks through a company’s filings on the SEC website, and determine if any of them is a disclosure type of document. Luckily, I was assigned to this project with two others.

Why do I like this project? Well, even though my major is computer science, I’ve always been interested in the finance field especially the stock market. I’ve been in the stock market for quite a while now, about almost two years. I’ve played with everything except shorting a stock. Not because I can’t or don’t know how to, but because of its high risk/reward ratio. However, I just learned something new as my project sponsor told us that he short stocks base on disclosures filed on companies, and how institutions pay huge amount of money to get access to this type of data.

The ultimate goal of this project is to allow users to beat the stock market, by having fast access to accurate information the minimum people have. Since I’m in the stock market, this obviously can bring significant benefits to me, which is also why this is my favorite project. On top of that, my project sponsor is a business professor who is also experienced in the stock market, meaning lots of knowledge I can gain throughout the project.

Another interesting fact: OSU pays $15,000 a year to use a software similar to this project.
