TRAINING

When I was being trained to become a restaurant server, I was trained by one of the in-house servers for three phases of the training process. In the first phase, I was required to follow the server around and observe how they act and study the menu material while helping to bring dishes back to the kitchen for washing. During the second phase, I was now incharge of helping the servers to run food to the tables and learn the layout of the restaurant since there are table numbers and sections assigned to each server. In the third phase, I was now accompanied by the server training me while I attempted to start serving by myself. The server training me was there to help carry food and drinks and also help me with the menu and any difficult customers that came up. I found this training to be especially helpful and I feel like I became a perfectly capable worker after completing it. I also was trained to work at a family fun park where they had bounce houses, mini golf, and bumper cars. I was very much just thrown into the job and did not receive any training on safety or how to deal with customers on the job. I had a brief overview on how to use the POS system, which I found out halfway through the summer that I was actually completing transactions wrong and charging an additional $5 to every customer. These to jobs differed in training practices in the level of detail and attentiveness they provided. The server job made sure to give all possible resources towards being a successful employee where the family fun park was unwilling to spend time training and were unsuccessful in giving an employee what they need to succeed.
