Child care providers educate our children and ensure their safety for many hours per week. Access to affordable and high-quality child care is critical for parents to be employed and provide for their family. Yet, while early educators have become increasingly qualified to provide high-quality care for every child over the years, their wages have remained stagnant. This issue has lead to a provider turnover and retention crisis that drives the systemic inequalities Oregon’s Early Childhood Education and Care system is trying to fix, leaving families scrambling for stability and support. To remedy this, Oregon should enact policies that give providers a just and livable wage through stable and direct financial support, strong contracts, and a collective voice.
